Roberto Martinez discussion

Wouldnt that make us worse off in the table standings? with the top 5 breaking away from us?

Not really. They'd gain a few points on us but the vast majority of points up for grabs are vs the bottom 14.

Mind this year everyone has beaten the bottom 14 so even though we've racked up more points than usual we're still only 7th so maybe you're right.

Oh, don't get me wrong if we have traded worse results vs the top 5 for better results vs the bottom 14 I'd take that every day of the week.

games vs top 5 in a season is 10 (30 points max)
games vs bottom 14 is 28 (84 points max)

so you would be happy to lose all games against the top 5 and win all the games against the other 14(ie 'trade' 30 points for 84 points).

Absolute genius. You might be on to something here!!!

I think what is happening on this thread now is a re-hash of the civil war we experienced on this board in the period between Moyes announcing his resignation and the Chelsea victory which established Roberto's bona fides. as our manager.

There are people on here whom never got over the fact Moyes left and have been waiting for a chance to put the boot into Bobby.

They sense this is their moment.

Then there are the boys who wanted rid of Moyes so much they welcomed Bobby with open arms and felt totally vindicated all through the golden autumn and early winter when EFC were the talk of the town.

But now that the dust has settled and we knuckle down to the grind that transition inevitably brings, they refuse to see any wrong in Roberto.

.
Don't buy it, whilst, I agree with the rest of what you say, regarding the above, Martinez is making mistakes on his own merit, peoples views of Moyes are nothing to do with it.

The Moyes- Martinez chestnut is getting a bit long in the husk isn't it? Yes, there are some people who want RM to trip up. These people are a disgrace. But thankfully, these Phil Wallings are few and far between.

I am yet to be convinced on all the players purchased for this club. I am not intrested in the loan players but how many of the players he has signed on a permenant basis has worked?

Birdman has been slow as treacle and plays once every 2 or 3 months
Kone looked mince before he got injured
Joel....next
Jimmy Mac - Done ok, works for me
Mc geady - looks bang average to me just as he was before he came to the club.

Not great is it. Talk of Rodwell...no thanks we are going backwards on that front.

Getting Lukaku and in Barry in on loan was a great move.

And McCarthy was exactly the player we needed.

I'm not denying there's question marks over his transfers, there are. But question marks isn't the same as defo rubbish.

He did a good job, on the whole, in the market at wigan and he improved us in the market this summer, sespite the fact that he's never been giving a positive transfer spend in his entire career. If nothing else, I think he's proven to be very good at selling (11 million for jelavic and vic is good business even if in the end we gained nothing from it as it wasn't reinvested) and he let a few players he could get prices for run out their contracts at wigan whereas otherwise his money in record would be even more impressive.

But yeah, it's a worry, we need to be good in the market to compete given our financial situation and Martinez is largely unproven. I will say that I don't expect him to be as good as Moyes was at spotting great players for little money, Moyes was superb at that, but given he looks to me to be a better tactictian, better motivator and better man manager he doesn't have to be to be a step up on the whole.

Im not sure we can give him credit for sales.

I doubt he deals with that side, sure he has a the "final say" probably, but I doubt he does the actual talkings.

Without getting the right players the rest of it doesn't matter.

Managers live and die by their signings, if he gets it wrong in the market he's blown it.

Moyes used frustrate the life out of us with his dithering, but he used to get it right on a regular basis, Martinez needs to match what he achieved in the market if he's to better what he achieved on the pitch.

Joel 1.5m is the only mistake really, but even then it's not exactly crazy money.
Kone is alright and would have done okay for 5m, very unlucky to get seriously injured immediately.
McCarthy is a good player, time will tell on his value.
Alcaraz, who knows, looks like a decent player but if he's never fit what's the point.
McGeady, bog standard Premier League player, worth having in the squad, 500k.

I'd say they're about average signings, but we could certainly do with going up a level from Wigan.

I think you have to give him a bit of credit for being brave enough to let people go. Moyes was petrified of selling players in case they did well and showed him up.

Yeah I think its unfair to put Kone in the miss pile.

Im not his biggest fan, I think hes a bit poo, but he really hasnt been given a real chance, I think he would have scored goals, I guess we find out next season. As for the others, they all scream of being a bit meh, McCarthy aside.
