Roberto Martinez discussion

Joel 1.5m is the only mistake really, but even then it's not exactly crazy money.
Kone is alright and would have done okay for 5m, very unlucky to get seriously injured immediately.
McCarthy is a good player, time will tell on his value.
Alcaraz, who knows, looks like a decent player but if he's never fit what's the point.
McGeady, bog standard Premier League player, worth having in the squad, 500k.

I'd say they're about average signings, but we could certainly do with going up a level from Wigan.

The lot look bang average with the exception of McCarthy. All about opinions but under these owners he has to get a lot more right than wrong !

McCarthy is the only one that cost serious money tho, so it's not really surprising that he's the best player. Kone you could question, some people think he's terrible and a waste of money, personally I think he's okay and would have been a decent signing for 5m had he not been injured. Alcaraz and McGeady were 500k combined, that's less than Moyes paid for Magaye Gueye. Joel I don't think will ever be good enough to be the #1, but Martinez clearly likes to play cup goalkeepers so you'd hope he improves enough to be worth the fee.

McCarthy - you have to give credit to Martinez/Reeve/Jones for bringing him down from Hamilton for a £1M. I know it was Martinez who subsequently bought him for £13M, but he would have fetched close on that from others at the time...and he certainly would now...in excess of it probably. Some of the signings he made at Swansea too: Williams (£400K), Dyer (£400K) have proven very astute.

Martinez is always going to be on a hiding to nothing on this issue though, because he followed in the footsteps of one of the most astute buyers the PL has seen. Comparing Martinez to Moyes is a bit unreal in that respect.

I for 1 arent really comparing him to Moyes or anybody else, im judging his signings, at Everton, first window was quite outstanding, 2nd window was terrible.

Lets see what the next window brings, my biggest fear was how he would operate in the transfer windows, lets hope he comes through.

I'm giving him the summer transfer window to make up for January and if he disappoints again I'm hiring a clown outfit and going on a march with a cake.

Something chocolate, spongey, moist.

The real money spent on alcaraz will be in wages and signing on fees, which is the difference between bringing in an experienced 30 odd year old international and a kid like gueye.

I happen to think very strongly that we don't need Alcaraz and that paying the wages of both heitinga and alcaraz for 6 months when neither was playing at all and both were on top dollar was beyond stupid.

I doubt it's going to bankrupt us mind. In the long run the prize money from finishing one position higher in the league will pay those extra wages. But given we have browning and stones who could have played the 90 minutes this season where we actually needed him, it's all very McFadden mark 2.

Mind that is nit-picking, I very much think the jury is still out on Martinez in the market but he's defo above average.

What a weird thing to make up to have a pop at a manager about.

Take a look for yourself. He let loads go.

I do think he sometimes held onto players do long.

Wenger was masterful at knowing when a player had peaked and could be offloaded without hurting the team. Where as we held onto Saha, Yakubu, Cahill and arguably Arteta a little too long, imo. The 7 million we turned down for Saha haunts me, still.

On the other hand, we played the Rodwell situation to perfection, mind.

Moyes got to sentimental and attached to certain players, which is understandable when you spend long amounts of time with a group of people.

Cahill, Neville, Yakubu,Saha,Billy,Vaughan... should have left a lot earlier
