Roberto Martinez: Let’s make 2016 a trophy season for my Toffees
ROBERTO Martinez is fed up staring into a trophy cabinet where old cups have gathered dust.

That is why the Everton boss is ringing in the new year more optimistic than ever about ending the Goodison honours’ drought.

Martinez feels that his new generation of Everton stars have the unquestioned ability to dramatically improve the proud history of this famous club in the next key five months.

The late great Howard Kendall was the last Everton manager to lift the title in 1987 while Joe Royle’s team beat Man United 1-0 to win the FA Cup in 1995.
But big season-changer games are coming up thick and fast starting with Tottenham today.

Then Everton face Manchester City in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Goodison on Wednesday followed by Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Dagenham and Redbridge.

Martinez is rubbing his hands at the prospect of those fixtures being the springboard for a great run to glory.

He said: “There are no two ways about it, we need to become better as a

Got fingers crossed for Everton that RM's personal crusade brings the success this club's fans deserve.

...yet.

New owners might have different ideas but it's all crystal ball gazing.

Maybe. And it's a big 'if' from me if that ever happens anyway.

Not convinced that any new owners would be budgeting for the sacking and the rehiring of a new manager if I'm honest. Would be quite expensive.

Oh and for the record, it wasnt even close to 28m.

Billy 9m
Johnny 5.5m
Distin 5m

Learn to MATH.

Positionally, Distin as a straight swap for Lescott was sound tactically and financially. Made huge cash on that deal. Heitinga was OK.

I thought like quite a few lads from that part of the world we didn't consistently see the best of Billy. Only Kanchelskis has really succeeded for me. Dunno why that is.

Kollarov seems ok, no others jump out.

Yes he did. But we used to get 60-65 points and had a poor away record against the 4 richest clubs.

Now we talk about Champions League, are on course for about 50 points for the second year in a row and can't beat anyone in the top half home or away.

We're half way through the season, let's see when it's done.
Can you recall more than a handful of away games ( Nuremburg, Villa, Utd in the 4-4) where we were remotely good under DM?
Out of interest who do you want to replace RM, and what will they bring?

Whatever may happen, Martinez gets NSNO more than Moyes ever did, and admirably more than a vast majority of our fanbase as well.

To be fair, if he brings in a cup, any cup, a lower than anticipated league position will be quickly forgotten. I'd take his style/approach over Moyes' in any cup game.

The "Alcaraz in Kiev" this year is going to be the continued absence of Phil Jagielka. Being stuck with 2 relatively inexperienced centre-backs is basically a 90 minute lottery as we are seeing, we might luck it out in cup games, but in the league it's unacceptable.

I apprecite his attacking style, but if/when he fails on his key target 2 years in a row because of a soft defence then we need an intervention from someone on the staff that he listens to, or get rid. I don't remember such a free scoring Everton side, but I also don't remember an Everton side prone to jeffing up so many games late-on, it's just not an Everton that I can stomach.

I love the new Everton and I can't wait to go the match and watch us again.

We're clearly under achieving with what we have now but it's still early stages for this you side and regardless of todays result, we're on the verge of something very special here.

If you can't see that it's your loss.

Credit to Moyes for getting us stable. Looking back though it was just a maintenance job and nothing more. Stay steady nothing more. That was the ambition. Now we are truly ambitious with good young players....a change of style...it ain't working yet and it might or might not work at all...but ambition is there. It may not be realised but we are trying. Defence has gone soft on us but the attack is a joy and we are in search of the balance. I am excited with what is happening at this club. Results haven't been great but I see a chink of light at the end of the tunnel rather than the darkness that preceded.

If you can't see that it's your loss.

The problem is.... you can only stand on a verge for so long without achieving.

Eventually said verge crumbles beneath your feet and you fall to the bottom of the cliff you climbed, with the 4 world class players not wanting to climb the cliff again with you and instead catching a helicopter ride straight to the top with a richer mate.

While were left struggling to climb again with all our baggage and a couple of new blokes struggling to fit in.

What we need is that extra push and balance in the team to help us go over and above this bloody verge! We need a left sided player that actually provides balance in the team! And a GK! At a push, also a backup striker, then I think we'd be much more balanced. These signings and some small tactical adjustments from Martinez would have us performing much better and it's pretty clear for most people to see.

Stoke game we should have won once we went 3-2, sub should have been made immediately to change shape and re-structure to be more solid, my main gripe with Martinez is that he doesn't seem to react to what is unfolding infront of him, most managers would immediately start stripping off a defensive player once they take the lead. Take for example Man City against Watford yesterday.... they were trailing, they pulled one back, then sent Bony on to try and get a winner, they took the lead, then straight away changed shape again and sent Demichelis on to seal the game out.

we are in search of the balance.

IMO a quick fix would be a CB of the Gareth Barry ilk in this window.

I think everyone sees potential in this team, which makes it equally frustrating that we are failing in such elementary areas. I don't think Martinez will ever balance our defense, he's just not wired that way, we need someone else to own this, be it on or off the pitch.

I agree you can only stand on the verge for so long but this is still very early in Martinez's career here and I think he's probably ahead of where he expected to be at this stage, squad wise. As Banno said, it's a long term project here, he's not looking for a quick fix.

I also trust this manager to keep hold of the player he wants to keep. He has excellent man management skills and as I've posted recently, I feel all the players want to play for him and that includes the likes of Mirallas and Naismith who seem to be out the fold at the moment.

If the manager wants any of them out, I trust him 100% to get the best deal for our club and only do what is right for our club unlike the last man who said he wouldn't stand in the way of someone furthering there career.

Oh I agree and that the manager has done extremely well to convince Lukaku and Del to sign here.

I wouldn't have dreamed that those 2 would have signed permanent deals with us, especially Lukaku.

I think if players do leave, we would still move on and hopefully progress with the huge money, but there is always risk involved when spending money, and you pay over the odds because teams know you're flush.

The dream is to keep Barkley, Del, Lukaku & Stones together and add more of their calibre, we can only hope that all 4 of them have a little patience, but my guess it is wearing thin with Rom and maybe John.

The biggest task for Martinez is to keep Lukaku here, while he hopefully has enough about him as a manager to resolve our teething problems.

Because I truely think Rom is irreplaceable right now, I don't think there is a single striker in world football that we could attract or afford the wages of, that would be good enough to fill the void.

Stan Collymore the epitomy of mediocrity in everything bar dogging

Everton and Roberto Martinez face a huge 2016 - more mediocrity just isn't good enough
This Everton team should be doing much better and if they don't challenge for Europe, they need to sit down and have a good look at themselves
