Roberto Martinez discussion

You know we've conceded a tonne of goals at home right?

And we're 11th?

Martinez did alright today, but he's got to do it consistently before your argument holds any water

That is not the question. You said he lacks 'defensive organisation'. If that is the case then why have we only concede 9 away from home, the best any manager of our club has achieved, if he can't organise the defence? It's simple really. Either he can or he can't.

There is something wrong somewhere when you have the leagues top scorer and you are in the bottom half winning 1 game in 8

Never said "He let it go" ffs. I was saying that if it hadnt hit the post, imo, he would have got a glove on it. But apparently we were dead lucky, should have been beat, cos every single bit of good fortune that goes our way, (see above post re "inside of post"), is in some way inexcusable, and evidence that we are rubbish, but when we suffer a bit of bad fortune, that is ignored.
Well said

So obviously by your and @hullefc 's reckoning, defence doesn't apply at home then?

Interesting....

More nonsense, do you really just post without thinking what you're writing. No one has said that anywhere.

We're Everton fans who can see loads of positives but 1 big worry, our defence.

On closer looking it seems these issues are only at home and not really away so it gives us more optimism that he may sort these issues out.

I suppose it depends l were you're coming from and if you're supporting the manager or not.

If he's got it covered then he gets hold of it - unless he knows FOR CERTAIN it's going wide. If he can't get hold, he tips it around the post.

He wasn't close enough to get a fingertip to it, and he didn't look like he pulled his hand away neither. He looked to be at full stretch to me.

He didn't have it covered imo.

having it covered means if the ball was on target....going in...then the keeper stops it. whether thats with his fingernail or catching it, whether at full stretch or lying in a hammock smoking a cigar.

given that, it is possible to have it covered and for a shot to hit the inside of the post and come back out.

i am being very pedantic though...im talking in general, as i am not sure that he did have it covered in this instance.

You're right

Conceding 8 goals in the last 3 home games really highlights our superb defensive organisation

Bloody hell, some of you get so butt hurt if everyone isn't 100% complimentary about Martinez all the time. It really is cult like.

Live in your panacea where Martinez is amazing and has us defending the best we've ever defended during 4-3 defeats at home

Your attitude will only turn reasonable people against your deity, and this is coming from someone whose Martinez In FFS

That's not what you were saying the other day.

"like a lot of teams (those derided as frauds and long all merchants) we tend to play on the counterattack away from home and do it to a reasonable degree of success. Sit deep, two holding mids, three CBs in the back 4, midfielder on the wing, one striker, lots of men behind the ball then we break at pace. Makes it easier to defend and probably accounts for the defensive upturn. It's when the master plan comes out at Goodison that the entertainers are picked off with ease by all and sundry".

Sounds like a plan/formation that is worked on from what you said. You never pooh poohed the teams we played the other day. You were only concerned with why the 'master plan' doesn't work at home.

I stand by the above. It's a combination of both factors. I only bothered to look up who we'd played away from home when you kept going on about it. Wasn't surprising to see a smaller number of games against poorer sides.

We do play on the counter more away from home though, and we are defensively more suspect at home when we try to take the game to the opposition.

If you want to go and tell Roberto to play counterattack every game then his defensive record probably would improve. But then we wouldn't be the entertainers would we?

Thought the second half substitutions gave us a much more balanced side, a few thoughts after the game:
Besic needs to be playing, especially in the absence of McCarthy, took the game by the scruff of the neck when he came on, something we have sorely missed.
Baines looked much more comfortable with Cleverly playing in front of him and the signs a promising that could develop in to a useful pairing on the left.
Barkley started to find pockets of space and have more influence on the game without Kone on the pitch as they often seem to occupy the sames space.

That first half was as bad as it gets, it genuinely looked like the players hadn't trained all week. It was a miracle we got in level at the break, we improved a lot in the second half. We badly need to fix this problem of one good half, one gash half

Yeah good points made.
