Roberto Martinez discussion

Kind of shows your limited knowledge of playing sport there. Just pick the angriest player as surely if they shout that makes them a good captain.

Are you also one of those who thinks players only care about losing if they kick off and sulk after it?

The manager you worship praises the man he chose to be his Captain, as @micknick says, there is obviously a lot more to the man than most are picking up on, and a football Club Captain does a lot more than just the 90 minutes on the pitch.

Also you can often see/hear Jags shouting and talking to players in games, and Lescott and Jags were highly praised as a central defensive partnership, and it was funny that at the time Yobo and Lescott could never hit it off the same, but either one alongside Jags seemed to look great.
'Limited knowledge of playing sport'...I played about as much sport as anyone in different teams from kid up to late 20s. What special insight can you offer us? Whatsmore, how is it a great advantage to have played a sport in order to see that someone on the pitch is demonstrably rubbish at organising people around him? Answer: none.

'There's obviously a lot more to the man most are picking up on'...ah, that'll be it. His leadership qualities are like a fine mist - barely seen and just sinks in. That's a convenient way to counter an argument.

...if that's the case then he want's to be careful his leadership mist doesn't get mixed up with ROBERTO's defensive acumen mist 'cos then there'll be mist everywhere and no-one will be able to see properly and as consequence of this not seeing properly through the bad mists then those at the top'll have to start talking in soundbites & positivity niblets only and...

Oh. That's already happened eh.

*What if BESIC has some mist? And LUKAKU, what if ROM's mist is only a fleeting mist? Oh gawd....it's like the end of days.

#Mist

Right on so much Dave but not on this imo.

Moyes, Hodgson and Martinez have all given him the captaincy. They can't all be wrong. And they aren't.

Nonsense, Dave. Stones looks far more like the player we hope he is when Jags is holding his hand. He doesn't cajole people around him, but that stuff is mostly hollow showmanship anyway. Give me composed Jags over a gurning horse like Henderson every day of the week.

oh boy.....the empire is collapsing.

Interesting, last few pages talking of captain and Jags in the RM discussion thread can't see the link myself.

However I am pleased to note that RM has come out and stated the need for euro footie to keep our young players. There is optimism here from me in view of his recognition that the league is more important then a cup. I applaud that honesty.

Similarly Besic has come out indicaating the need to make a top four charge, more honesty.

I go along with all that there is no need for the pessimum shown by some folk who feel all must be put aside to win a trophy.

Funes Mori has been the pick of Everton's CBs so far. Hopefully Jagielka wont work his 'influence' too much his way.

Kompany is the blue print for a good captain. In his own words:

“I shout before we go out and when we’re on the pitch to fire up the team. So does Joe Hart. There are moments when you need to get a message across and you have to do it calmly. When things aren’t going well, you need to be more vocal and tell the team it’s not over yet. If we are losing, we’ll tell each other to keep going – to keep running. This helps the team raise its level. First it’s the attitude, then you have to show your passion – shout that you’re going to do better. When a scuffle kicks off on the pitch you, as the team captain, need to be the first in there to calm it down. Sometimes you need to help the referee, as it’s not always easy for them. But sometimes you have to defend a team-mate because experienced opponents will try to be clever and influence the referee. I’ll always be the first player over there to make sure the voice of our team is heard and that the players are being protected.”

Look you dont see him running around shouting and balling at everyone on the pitch and if you think that makes a good captain again I think you are misguided and probably never played any sport yourself.

Im not saying that from what I see is that he is a superb captain but I believe he is very underrated player that has a calming influence on the side- the proof is in the pudding:

- Lescott was never the same player when he didnt have Jags next to him
- Distin pretty much resurrected his career playing next to him
- Stones looks far more composed when he is there with Jags (which you alluded to yourself)

I just dont get the bashing of Jags- hes a good player and I think if he had been playing especially the games where we snatched draws from the jaws of victory they would have in fact been wins.

Oh and a good captain in my opinion represents the club on and off the field.

For me, excellent post

I really believe all of the above BUT for me he not a captain. Yes he is experienced, yes he is a good solid defender but not a leader that a young team needs.

We need a natural "winner" type at this moment with this young team... Roy Keane , Peter Reid .... for me we need someone in the middle of the park who can influence all areas of the pitch, leave Jags to sort the back out but lets have someone with a little bit of savy, snide and willingness to get in the refs face.

I have always played football and believe a captain should be in the middle.... in jags we have a leader , lets back this up in the more crucial areas of the park with somene who can guide the young gems

Theres lots of different types of captain. It would be interesting to know which type are more successful but i guess it depends on the team itself and the manager.

Terry and Kompany. Captains of the two most successful teams in the last few seasons.
