Roberto Martinez discussion

Martinez will always have to carry the 'baggage' around with him, for some, that he managed Wigan.

Dunno about that mate, Moyes never had a Preston tag on him, i don't think even Wigan going down is an issue for most. Martinez is now being judged by his decisions and the things he says.
Maybe he hasn't had the same length of honey moon period as Moyes got, but there really is no excuse for taking us backwards at a time when a lot of other clubs are in stagnation. Liverpool, Chelsea, United all in a mess, there has never been a better time to push forward, but we are going backwards while the likes of Palace and Leicester move on.

Leicester could well be one season wonders. Remember Ipswich and Burley? Norwich and Walker?

As for Pardew, he's got form. He had one good/great season with both Newcastle and West Ham, before they soon reverted back to fighting relegation.

Taking us backwards?? maybe it could be argued that were slightly below Moyes's level in the league although there has been major changes in how we play and he has actually bettered every corresponding season to Moyes i.e.. better 1st season, better 2nd season, better 3rd season. Martinez also had more points around Xmas than Moyes had in 4 of his last 5 years here so it's not vastly different however the calibre of player and quality fo football we now play is.

He's already took this squad on leaps and bounds from the ageing, workman like squad he was left and it's down to him playing up expectations and making every one believe that he isn't getting a longer honey moon period. He's set the bar very high nd fans have moved on from Moyes. In time, and I mean very soon, we'll notice the fruits of all his good work but in the meantime, sit back and enjoy our first real opportunity of winning a trophy for 20 years as we now have a proven winner in charge who's proven in the past he's got what it takes to beat more resourced clubs and win major honours.

We are VERY VERY lucky to have Roberto.

He's a class act, knows his football inside out - which is in line with Everton's traditions, and something he is very respectful of. He puts Everton first all the time.

Compare that with the previous occupant of the manager's office with his agricultural method of 'football' and the half an eye he had on the United job all the time he was here.

I'm glad we got Roberto in. We're playing great football at times and you can see how the young players are developing under him. He needs to sort out the defence, sure, but if he does manage to and we can keep our team together there's a good chance we'll do something special.

Even though it's gutting when we lose I'd prefer us to play this type of football to the dross we were playing under Moyes. Everyone just needs to give him more time to get a grip on the defence.

Will he solve the defence in the long term?

No one knows for sure but he's done so much in terms of developing how we play and improving our young players that I'm more than prepared to be patient until it gets to a point where it's beyond doubt that he's not able to convert performances in to results. That point is still a long way off to me.

I've read some stuff about new owners making a difference to Martinez's tenure. He's in a job until he wants it right now, that's for sure. But I dont see that changing dramatically in the event of a takeover. If the mooted new owners come in it's on the back of the PL tv revenue being secured for a number of years which gives them a platform to get the stadium question settled. They're going to want stability and that means PL security. Martinez is tried and tested and in situ. It'd have to be a slump of mammoth proportions for this type of owner to panic, get rid and chance their arm with another manager.

He's basically here under contract until 2019. I can see his contract being renewed by another couple of years in the summer. If he stays the course that'll have seen him 8 years here and that's enough for him to have shown what he can do: taking into account with that timescale the breaking up of Moyes' squad (underway right now) the construction of his own squad (just started in earnest) and the maturing of that squad and tweaking of it.

Not disagreeing with you that players want to play for Martinez, but I believe the PL is a bigger draw than any manager. You only have to see the good players who'll go to basket case clubs to see that. Everton is a massive draw with or without Martinez and is the pinnacle of most players careers.

I hope we sign - and bring on - players who are the envy of bigger clubs, even if some do leave with the ambition of winning trophies.

Hi Roberto, hows it going?

Martinez has surely known about the holes in the defensive side of the teams he managed all his career - its not like its just happened, Wigan's defence was horrific and ours has deteriorated in each of his seasons.

He is just an attacking manager, he'd rather outscore opposition then shut up shop. I think its more frustrating sometimes because we were used to shutting up shop - while drawing 1-1.

Its exciting and frustrating at the same time - but id rather watch out attacking play then some of the boring crap some teams put out in the premier league at the moment.

Keeper and replacing older members is a must at the moment.

Lets be fair here, balance and all that. He knows his ATTACKING football inside/out. Still has a lot to learn about the defensive side of the game.

You cant help but want him to succeed tho. I desperately do, I just want him to figure out the BALANCE between attacking and learning how to deal with set pieces/corners and to figure out how we get sliced open so easily with 6 defensive players on the pitch at a time.

The answer to those questions is an adequate GK, no more than that...as we've seen in the last couple of outings. It's not a systemic thing; it's a personnel thing. He needs to cut the cord on Howard.
