Roberto Martinez discussion

Taking us backwards?? maybe it could be argued that were slightly below Moyes's level in the league although there has been major changes in how we play and he has actually bettered every corresponding season to Moyes i.e.. better 1st season, better 2nd season, better 3rd season. Martinez also had more points around Xmas than Moyes had in 4 of his last 5 years here so it's not vastly different however the calibre of player and quality fo football we now play is.

He's already took this squad on leaps and bounds from the ageing, workman like squad he was left and it's down to him playing up expectations and making every one believe that he isn't getting a longer honey moon period. He's set the bar very high nd fans have moved on from Moyes. In time, and I mean very soon, we'll notice the fruits of all his good work but in the meantime, sit back and enjoy our first real opportunity of winning a trophy for 20 years as we now have a proven winner in charge who's proven in the past he's got what it takes to beat more resourced clubs and win major honours.

That works as an argument, only if you ignore that Moyes took over a team near the bottom of the league, and built it up to one that Martinez took over one near the top, on a net spend of less than 13m over 10 years.

Whereas Martinez has already spent around 45m to add to a quality team he inherited, of course he's going to have a better team with better finishes than Moyes, especially in the early years.

So far though, on one hand he took a quality defence and destroyed it, but on the other took an average midfield, good youth setup and poor strike force and pushed it on dramatically.

We have gone backwards in the one place it truly matters, results, but hopefully its steps back to push forwards, it certainly seems to be so far, but we have definitely gone backwards.. We finished bottom half last season which we have not done for a long, long time.

That being said, its good to see us playing this form of football, its very pretty but we other don't get many shots on target in a game, so its frequently not so much good attacking football. But when Barkley's back heeling to Coleman who one twos with Barry, on to Deulofeu, who places it slap bang on top of Kone's head with the whole move being one touch passing....

..It doesn't matter that the next move is a goal kick because Kone 'donkey'd' it out of Goodison (a goal kick which they may well score from of course), it was just sweet viewing the showboating going on.. besides Lukaku hasn't scored yet in the game so we are on for a draw even if they do score from the goal kick :-)

Currently we are playing nice football and still have bags of potential, but its fast approaching time that potential needs to become results imo. A Cup win should do it, but a goalkeeper and defensive signings would be just as useful ;)

Results - Backwards
Style - Improved
Defence - Backwards
Attack - improved
Squad Age - Improved
Squad quality - Improved

Its a bit style over substance, but with enough improvement around most areas to suggest that we can have both style and substance under Martinez.

ps... The better at Christmas stat thing is a bit.. well.. begins with Raw*

Finally the difference in quality of player he has is down to both the players left to him, Stones, Barkley etc.... combined with a lot of money spent, which really helps to get good players into a team already fighting for European places.

He's done well but needs to improve before he overshadows what came before imo.

We are VERY VERY lucky to have Roberto.

He's a class act, knows his football inside out - which is in line with Everton's traditions, and something he is very respectful of. He puts Everton first all the time.

Compare that with the previous occupant of the manager's office with his agricultural method of 'football' and the half an eye he had on the United job all the time he was here.
I think it works both ways
I agree we are very fortunate in getting RM
But I do believe he is very fortunate in being employed by a Club that will give him time and space, he wouldn't get this at many clubs

So think for me it works both ways for me

Thats a good thing.

Spending a great deal of money to complement an already potent attack while completely ignoring the keeper costing us game after game will wreck my head tbh.

It's also not Roberto's fault that the league as a whole has become very close. Anyone can beat anyone and its made for some truly odd results this season. I find it hard to believe that Moyes would still have us top 6-7 with little more attacking nouce than bang it up to a large lad or ENGAGE the bainaar !!

I keep hearing this is the best squad we have had in years, and to a point it maybe.
BUT you never hear the comment this is the year everybody had the best squad they have ever had

Bournemouth just signed a forward for 10ml, the money is ther for every club and they are spending it

Our spending is around youth and potential, it will serve us well moving forward
