Roberto Martinez discussion

Horses for courses. I'd ne amazed and annoyed if he didn't approach pony sides like that with an all out attacking display to gain the initiative and run a few goals in. The type of defensive resilience we've seen in the last few weeks should only be seen in games like that when we have built up such leads.
Horses for courses is fine, but we could have done with a bit more of that defensive resilience when we were getting webbed all over the place by Leicester, Stoke and Bournemouth.

All true but I think the problem lies a bit in the mentality of this team. Not good enough to consistently beat the smaller teams but good enough to avoid defeat against a top side. At no point against Spurs, City (league) United, Liverpool or Arsenal did I think we were going to win. Even the parts of the games we played well there was just always a sense that whatever happens we're not getting the win not even nicking one. This means that all those frustrating draws to 'lower' sides are just compounded by the fact we never pick up an unexpected 3 points at a big ground. Too many draws even if the defensive performance was far better. How does he change it? I don't know, drawing too many games has been an Everton trait for about 20 years not just a Martinez problem.
Have to agree, look at Leicester last night corner final minute bang winner, yes we did it against Newcastle but never against top side. We haven't won at Arsenal,RS,Chelsea for at least 13 years, and once in 13 at Utd

'Webbed all over the place' doesn't sound like a true reflection of those games, which we largely dominated.

Lessons will have been learned on the protecting a lead issue. But the very last conclusion that should be drawn from those games is that we should draw in our horns against the likes of those teams and play in a more conservative manner.

All he's done is what he did this time last year when we were struggling, basically nothing changed from last season, still weak defensively just slightly better going forward thanks to Del Boy, were we where losing 2-1 or 1-0 we were losing 4-3 or 3-2. The last 3 games(excluding fa cup) we've been more defensive but looked pritty toothless up front and thanks to their strikers either hitting it at the goalie or missing it completely and some non pens we've not lost.

Who would you rather have as manager mate? Just out of curiosity.

I personally don't have a problem with Martinez, I don't really know who we would get instead of him. Or who I'd like. It just seems like nothing changed since last season, were either full gun Ho and can't keep a lead or to defensive and look toothless, what we need is him to find the perfect balance. Our left side needs sorting and we have 0 threat from the left

Fair enough - For me I see a fair bit of improvement. Whether it's enough or not have to wait and see.

Bobby's done a better job than I thought at building up expectations after us bring told we should be aiming for 40 points every season.

He takes a team to City, the richest club in the world, champions Lge group winners and generally regarded as favourites for everything here. We are the better side for the first 45 mins, then sit in in the 2nd half and look really solid at the back whilst stopping them scoring for only the second time in a year whilst also looking very, very menacing on the break and this is somehow being used a stick to beat the manager with??

There's some bad, clueless idiots following this club.

I agree that anyone criticising him for last night is clueless, I'd always take a point in those games and a clean sheet was just what we needed.

He really hasn't raised expectations though, there's plenty on here who'll swear blind that finishing in the top 8 is effectively impossible in the new super duper ultra competitive premier league. 5 years ago 5th wasn't good enough, now only being 8 points behind 5th half way through the season is said like a boast.

The city result was great and no ones saying it wasnt, but our last 3 wins(in the league) have been against the bottom 3 teams. 2 wins in 9. So yes its only 8 points but at the moment that looks a huge task, with tough away games still to come. Chelsea,Utd and the RS which in recent years weve struggled at

That's just it, WHO?? For all people's moaning of Martinez, who really is out there that would do a better job? No one of any proven quality would come to Everton at the moment so would have to be a risk appointment.
Better the devil you know.
How would we rather Everton play if the two styles were the only option? 'Gung-ho' as at the moment but be entertained most weeks with but maybe lose 4-3 or 3-2 here and there or the way Moyes had em playing, defensive quite boring where we might lose 2-1 or 1-0 here or there??
With a bit of tweaking on the defence without hindering our attacking options is something we need to give Martinez time to sort.

I enjoyed how we played in Moyes last few seasons to be honest, nice football, good counters, quick passing, good goals and defensively good as well..

I also like our current passing play (bored me first two seasons but is looking sweet now its sped up considerably), but we need to work a lot on our decision making, especially with counters.
We have had the numerical advantage on counters quite a few times this season and made the wrong choice on most of them, think that needs a little tweaking, if we can break with Coleman, Deu, Lukaku and Barkley, sometimes Mirallas too, and not pass it to their CB or too wide of the goal we will be utterly terrifying to play against, especially if you are not the quickest at the back. Imagine seeing that lot coming at you :)

But given the choice I would trade points for what people consider 'a boring style' any day. The signs are there that we won't have to though, and we can start getting both.. just a bit more time needed.
