Roberto Martinez discussion

Im sorry but his selections have been baffling this season at times and he doesn't have a plan B. At least Moyes had the background of pretty much saving the club from the abyss so we all had a bit of patience when things weren't going right. Martinez doesn't have that unfortunately and with the players we have we shouldn't be conceding 17 goals in 7 games, losing at home to Palace, dropping players who have played really well, putting in dour performances in cup competitions when they are our only chance at silverware, dropping points in the last 5 minutes of games twice, all after breaking the record for transfers in Everton history. His post match comments are also annoying me.

Its a shame because I loved him when he first came, and of course Im not so fickle that I want him gone as I still believe hes the right man for the club and the team but he needs to sort it out quickly, especially the defence.

Spot on mate.

I don't want him out or anything daft, he's just testing my patience. His selections have been weird and his post match comments have added insult to injury. Mirallas has been decent for us and he's been dropped twice (I think) already this season. Naismith too. The defence as well has just been awful.

A 4 1 win against Wolfsburg (which I happen to think was one of the weirdest results ever, because I thought by and large we were gash and Wolfsburg deserved something) doesn't cover it up for me. Last night reminded me of a 2 0 loss away at Bolton a few years ago, where I realised I was finally fed up of Moyes.
Yeah I agree with you and add to that his failure to loan/buy a right back and centre back its worrying.

I like the guy but agree this tactical flexibility thing seems a bit of a myth. He only ever seems to tweak rather than completely alter and if we are in a bit of a rut, he just reverts to the same thing convinced that his football will work out, I feel.

He settled for strengthening his attacking options, which is great but when it's to the exclusion of dealing with finding a successor to one of our ageing Cbs and ignoring the fact we have no natural stand in for Coleman it's short sighted to say the least. I don't think anyone could believe, having punted Duffy to (apparently) make space for a replacement, he sat on his hands in the last few days of the open window.

He made a massive error. I'm a Martinez believer 100%, but it's beyond question he failed to bolster defence and placed all his eggs stupidly in the attack basket. Now we reap what he sowed.

Distin was possibly our best defender last season. He's had an injury so far and perhaps isn't fully fit. He certainly doesn't look fully fit along with quite a few of the others. Pre-season has a lot to answer for, it almost felt like when your exams come around and it dawns on you that you haven't done any work for them, but the footys on so you figure you'll just wing it.

Jags, Distin, McCarthy and Barry have all looked off the pace compared to last season, and have all been at fault for goals. I made a post in the leaking goals thread, slow in body slow in mind, that's where the mistakes are coming from, and ultimately why the confidence has been eroded. It's easy to just blame the defenders but someone needs to provide cover as well when both full backs bomb on frequently. The style of football leaves us open at times, we need more mobility in midfield to cover, and Barry while good at what he does do, does not have that mobility. He needs to stay put.

If we had brought in another centre back in the Summer, we'd have had too many players for those positions, which is a waste of resources. Martinez splashed the budget on Lukaku and I'd be surprised if many disagreed with him. If Lukaku continues as he has done over the years he'll be worth twice as much in two years time, and over the years it's been not having a proper goal scoring striker that has held us back.

We have 2 players for every position in defence. Coleman-Jags-Distin-Baines vs Hibbert-Stones-Alcaraz-Garbutt. Obviously it's not like for like in terms of quality but the players are there. We didn't need one more unless someone was going out. You also have Besic and Galloway who can both play in defence as well as the younger kids. Natural selection will change the back four around, and it's likely Stones will come through and be a starter, but he's made mistakes himself.

For me Martinez has made a mistake with the preparation for the season and then playing too many players who were not up to the required fitness levels at the same time. Jags was injured last season and mentally had a bad WC, so perhaps needed a bit more management, as for me he's the one who has looked off the pace the most. I also don't like both full backs bombing on at the same time every game, when sides sit back and try to hit us on the break, we need to make sure we don't leave ourselves exposed.

Should not have let Duffy go IMO. Duffy could now be in there getting first team game time and possibly striking up a partnership with Stones because I think it will be a while before Galloway can step up.

You cannot include or should not the likes of Hibbo and Alcaraz.

Duffy was not good enough and isn't a prem player. Its easy to say " we shouldn't of sold him" as we're shipping goals. Duffy isn't the answer cutting out our mistakes and having faith in jags and stones is.

Absolutely this. It's only at the point of a defensive crisis of sorts we are bemoaning Duffy going. He still isn't good enough.

I thought he could cut it and it may have been better to have him replacing Distin when Stones was at RB.
