Things that would 'probably' happen if Martinez left.
1. Break up of the squad.
The likes of Lukaku, Barkley, Dela, Stones are far more likely to look elsewhere if he goes. Whatever we as fans seem to think of RM the players enjoy playing under him and some of them, including Lukaku and Dela probably wouldn't be here in the first place if it wasn't for him.
2. Less attractive football
We're playing some great football, if we can get more consistency from the defence we'll shoot up the table. Whoever we get to replace RM it's seriously unlikely we'll be playing in the style we are atm.
3. League positions
Chances are we'd finish anywhere between 7th - 12th most of the time, depending on the ability of the manager brought in, unless we bring in a manager who's seriously talented. Some people on here seem to think if we get rid of RM we'll automatically get in the top 4. We don't have the money to 'expect' top 4. Our squad has a lot of potential that is developing, we're having to gamble on less experienced raw talent to compensate and it won't take much improvement in some players levels of consitency for our performances to transfer in to results.
I imagine most neutral supporters reading the forums would be shocked at some of the negativity directed at RM, not because we're such an 'entertaining' team for them to watch but because they can see the potential our team has if it can be kept together and nurtured. They probably wonder why some fans don't want to give him more time after the kind of performances we've put in this season.
4. Young Players
RM has shown he knows how to develop players and is prepared to give them a chance, unlike a lot of managers who don't have the guts to play them for fear of failure. Half the forum were slating Lukaku last season for his hold up play but he's improved so much this season and that's both credit to the player and RM. Dela's game is improving, Besic is taking command of games, Barkley is more productive, etc.
From a financial view point RM is raising the market value of our players so much that if one of our star players does have to go he'll have a lot of money to reinvest in the team. His ability to work with young players will help give us a financial edge over other teams in the long run. With the new TV money making all teams more competitive financially it'll help give us an edge.
From my point of view we could replace RM today and if we get a good manager in we might improve our league position by 5-6 places for a couple of seasons before the bulk of our squad is broken up but I feel in the long run we'd been in a weaker position to challenge for the top 4 places.
We just need to keep our team together for as long as possible and if we can improve the defensive side of our game by 10% we'll start getting seriosuly good results. The margins at this level of football are so small and we can all see our players have the talent, they just need time.
RM is our best shot at keeping the core of our team together for as long as possible and if he can fix the defensive side and keep them together I really believe he can get us in the top 4. Some of the fans just need to stop deluding themselves that we have enough money to expect to be in the top 4 all the time and start looking at the bigger picture rather than knee jerking every 5 seconds like they do on match day.
