Roberto Martinez discussion

I reckon if Moyes was given the chance to spend 28m on a player, instead of having to sell several players for that sort money to progress the team, I think he may of done better than he did.. which even before that is better than Martinez has us doing currently.

We are going to pick up points and he may win every game from here till RM retires... but so far criticism is deserved because he has taken us backwards, and anyone who thinks 11th is the same as 6th needs to consider Everton's need for money to compete amongst other things.

£875,000 per game shown + 8.75m standard... The higher we finish and better we are against bigger teams and the more we push for Europe... the more games we get and they are worth nearly a mil each

£1,236,083 the money per place x 5 for the previous 11th/6th comparison... £6,180,415 x 2. That's over Moyes entire budget over the ten years he was here. lose that two years in a row like we are on course for currently and we miss out on the chance of buying another decent player. But I guess you find say Osman preferable to a 12m replacement?

Personally I'd like Everton to have the extra 12m, the extra games, the better players, the chance for Europe and the sheer pleasure of winning games.

Seems to me you may as well just watch the cup games and save yourself the boredom of the following the pointless league you don't care about.

Amuses me how there is no difference between 5th and 11th places... but those points Martinez got in his first season meant everything.

How much did we earn from the Europa League last season?

And how much have we earned from the League Cup this season?

Goals for is slightly midleading though. Sure we have scored that amount of goals etc. and that's totally true. But we put 10 past Villa and Sunderland. 2 games which inflate our goal difference column and warranted only 6 points.

I think the issue now is that there is only so long people can wait thinking we're about to turn a corner. Once that corner never comes, players will start to lose faith and form will dip.
i meant it in a general sense mate. not breaking game by game down lol Just pretty much the only teams who have scored more are in the title race and the only teams who have conceded more are in a a relegation scrap. Basically means the goals scored which is 4th best is counter acted by goals conceded which is 15th best. obviously the league position is where we should be but it highlights the problem, martinez's strength and weakness both at the same time.

Much like that first Martinez season benefited massively from the fitness and organisation defensively left by Moyes, i honestly think the young talented squad could make a massive improvement under a new manager
The funny thing is, all we need is the defense to be solid and hold shape whilst the offense keep doing what they are doing, with a little overlap when they need to. I can't draw a diagram of it but in the simplest terms we shut out teams more often and we are higher in the league. We are obviously doing enough down one end to win games!

Well that and it was boring football, think we all wanted better footy which may lead to better results.

As we are seeing now mate, better football only matters really if the results are better though, same way as boring football with results most supporters will in the end accept

End of the day i didn't want Martinez originally, i wanted Tuschel then at Mainz, but have given the bloke my backing - even last season - this one though the way it has turned and maybe more so because the league is so literally wide open that Leicester could actually win it is more disappointing than even last season, because it can't be called a blip now this is what we are under Martinez, a poor mans Keegans Newcastle or a rich mans Wigan

After sleeping on it im still fuming. I really cant see how we can keep him in charge.

In his last two seasons at Wigan his win percentage was 25%. If our form continues until the end of the season ours will be around the 30% mark with a much more talented team. Thats simply not good enough. Yes Wigan lost alot more games than we have but its wins that get you high up the table. He needs to start winning games and consistently so. Over the past season and a half there has been no signs of him being able to manage the team to do so.

With our board it will take us to voice our displeasure at the next home game we throw away to see any change. I'm not sure everyone will be behind that though.

Agreed mate. This is no blip in form, this is a sustained period of poor form and underachieving. The guy has built a talented squad, nobody can take that away from him, but he absolutely cannot stop any prem team he manages from conceding ridiculous amounts of goals. That first season was the anomaly it would seem, as he still benefitted from the tough defense we had under Moyes. Got to go for me now.

they are now in league one mate. BEfore roberto they were at least having a half decent attempt of establishing themselves in the top league. Bruce had them mid table before he left and roberto then took them down the league each season before finally relegating them and condeming them pretty much back down the divisions (player exodus).

More to the point, what saved wigan in the past? It was a late surge of points from around end feb-start of march onwards? Can you think of a season everton have had where we didn't drag ourselves out of danger until march time?

As much as many people don't want to admit it, the parralels are there.

Wigan never had a chance of establishing themselves in the Premier League. Dave Whelan required Martinez to cut the wage bill by 25% while he was there - and it was already one of the smallest in the Premier League. At the same time, other clubs were rapidly increasing theirs.

The surprise wasn't that Wigan were relegated, the surprise was that they stayed up so long. The cup win by an injury-hit, cobbled-together relegation-bound team against the might of Manchester City was another FA Cup fairy tale.

That may well be true but under Bruce they were putting up much more of a fight of it, whereas martinez waited until march to start his season each year.

It is easy to say this and that about why wigan went down, at the same time martinez invested poorly with the money from transfers at times, and ultimatly that cost him in the end.

but wigan going down is not the point tbh, if they were doomed then they were eventually doomed. the reflection is how similar we are performing to his wigan team. Take rom and del out of our first team this season (which could well be the case next season) and would we still be mid table? In fact take roms goals alone out the team where would we be? Lukaku is a top striker, to be hanging our season on his back is pretty poor by itself.

Whilst we all don't think we will get sucked in, if Newcastle beat us they are 5 points behind us.

Can anybody after yesterday confidently say they expect us to beat anybody at the moment?

I like the bloke and insisted he should stay as his idea is all right with te building and the football but the execution for the last 18 months has been awful, give him to the end of the season see if he can build some sort of momentum, if not and we're still conceding like this he has to go which is a shame because he does seem like a good feller
