Roberto Martinez discussion

10th and a cup with this squad mate?

Why should for the sake of a game against Norwich, a two legged one against city and whoever the final is against be willing to sacrifice an entire league season when Leicester are top?

Absolutely unbelievable how as a fan base our expectations have been managed down to 10th place and a league cup as a great season

It's absolutely unbelievable how some of our fan base can't be arsed with winning a cup

It's not a case of "can't be arsed" Mikey - it's that it should be the cherry on top, not the actual dessert.

We should be doing well in the league, which would organically increase your chances of a cup. Winning a cup while performing terribly in the league is akin to grabbing a goal against the run of play once and winning a game, only to know you're likely to lose the next ten as you're playing horribly.

I never said that. I don't see anyone that did.

What I am saying is it's unbelievable how some of our fans consider winning the league cup and finishing 10th is a good season.

Realistically that's a best case scenario for this season but we shouldn't accept it as a good season.

Moyes consistently got us top 7, 4th once and an FA cup final to boot but we wanted more. Now that's gone out the window and we are happy with a league cup. Come on!

Someone summed it up earlier very well. Wigan won the FA Cup which must have been marvellous and Martinez was praised heavily for.

However, in the same season he got Wigan relegated. Without the gloss of his cup success that year, would he have came so highly praised?

Would we have got him? Simply put... No. Of course I want us to win the as I thrive for silverware, but will it just hide the long-term cracks?

There are simply far too many problems emerging from what should be a successful squad for me to believe Martinez has the capability to fix them.

Is 10th "terrible" though?

17th? Yeah, that's arse awful, but 10th?

Again, hardly cause for panic, especially if winning a cup convinces Stones and Lukaku to stick around a bit longer

We should try and win every game we play, but if we end it in 10th and with a Cup in the cabinet, you'll have to forgive me for not fleeing to the lifeboats

But Mikey mate, surely you can see that if these Manager changed and learnt from his mistakes we'd be challenging top four and on the cusp of ending a trophy draught?! Id be unbelievably chuffed if we win the Cup, but a bottom half finish to accompany it? Nah. Cause we'll all be sitting here asking WHAT IFs. What if he actually gave Joel a run? What if he actually decided to change and learn? We're below teams that we're better than by an absolute mile yet horrible management puts us in an embarrassing twelth place.

A lot of ifs. Let us see what happens. Another season like last year's, we should consider sending him packing in May.
Winning a cup does make a difference as we won nothing since 1995.

We agree on most, but here I disagree my friend.

Getting our team through to the semi-finals of any cup competition is an achievement regardless of the opposition faced.

No-one talks about who Arsenal beat to the FA Cup years ago, do they? Does anyone even remember?

Martinez's reign will be based on trophies and league finishes, not whether the fans deemed the opposition worthy in the run in of both.

No but I guess its not about what will be remember, but more about right now offsetting the cup run so far to balance the assessment of the league season so far. And in that respect I can understand the point that a win over the teams we have met so far and one good game against City is not really enough of a comfort to those worried fans.
