Roberto Martinez discussion

Just now watching RM's presser.

2 mins in, he says this - I haven't seen anyone mention it so far...

"We've had a huge amount of draws in the league, a lot have been finely - very close to being - victories, and you're talking about a huge amount of points that we drop in those situations. So you need to make sure we used all the pain of what we had on Wednesday to become as good as we an from now until the end of the season and I am convinced we will get the rewards if we apply ourselves in those little margins."

Not once there, not once, does he lay blame anywhere. He admits we have dropped points. He is correct in saying a lot of those draws should have/were very close to victories (for a variety of reasons), and he is right in that we need to use the 'pain' (for lack of a better word) of losing on Wednesday - again, he isn't pinning any blame elsewhere - to spur us on to be better, and like he says, have that extra push to turn those draws into wins. We've lost six games all season in all comps. It's the draws that are costing us.

Not one there, not once, does he acknowledge that those fine margins have been due to crap defending and gash game management. Those are the 'little margins' that have cost us dear.

You're a better man than me, I have no idea what he means anymore !

"Every football club in the world will lose players. There is a price and when you get that you have to reinvest in good players - that is not a worry at all.

"We don't have to balance books - we are not going to lose players on the cheap'.

Martinez, 2013
Martinez, 2016 - inevitably.

I'll admit sometimes he baffles me. But it's important to note that what I quoted was from the first question in the presser - a question about the referee and a chat with Mike Riley.

He said, and I'm paraphrasing, 'of course it is frustrating, and you would like an explanation, but we also need to look at ourselves', before going on to then say what I quoted.

I think RM should stop talking about cup titles, Europe ambition etc. We should just focus on winning the next game and see how it goes at the end of the season. RM can drum up expectations for the fans and the players at the start of each season but with our disastrous record so far, it is just ridiculous to talk about such things.

I prefer the pragmatism by Leicester and Ranieri. Let's not look stupid when we are twelve in the table.

A bit of an analogy. Say you owned a business. RM managed your business and had done for the last 3 years. This is the business that pays your mortgage, feeds your family and is providing for your retirement. If he had comparable results to his EFC acomplishments, would you be happy to let him carry on.

That's taking responsibility - we need to apply ourselves better in those situations - which is true. He wasn't going to come out and say 'the defending is tosh', is he? As much as fans want him to, it just won't happen - he's not going to publicly criticise his team. It/he just doesn't work like that. Just because fans want it to doesn't make it so.

But when he does that pragmatic approach (e.g. tactics at City on weds), he gets criticised for showing a lack of ambition...
