Roberto Martinez discussion

Too many draws. Need to improve the defence. I believe we've shown signs since the turn of the year that we are recovering some of that solidity. Still not the best, no, but getting it back somewhat. I'm willing to give it a little while longer.

We are 30 days into the new year

We've conceded 10 in 7 games.

Take out the two clean sheets - one against the mighty Dagenham - and that's actually 10 goals in 5 games.

If that is solid, god help us.

But you're including a semi-final in that, primarily a semi-final second leg where we were away from home against a team that could bring on a£50mil substitute and have only failed to score once (against us a few weeks before) in a game (home or away) in over a year...

And still, they needed a helping hand from the ref and a wicked deflection to get two of those goals...

I don't think you can base anything on Wednesday's game, so for the sake of balance I then left out our superb performance in the first leg, as well as the Dag and Red. game which is irrelevant to an extent.

I clearly stated league games. And I clearly stated that, while not solid, I think we had shown signs of improvement compared to the final four games of 2015, which in the main were against sides less talented than Spurs, City and Chelsea.

Why keep doing this to yourself mate?

99 league games under RM.

Wins 39
Draws 31
Losses 29
Goals for 149 (av. pm 1.51)
Goals conceded 123 (av. pm 1.24)

21 of those wins were in his first season. That leaves 18 wins from the last 61 games. The trend is all important here, fewer games being won over time and more goals are being conceded (84 in the past 61 games, av. pm 1.38). The goals conceded this season (34 in 23 games, av. pm of 1.48) are turning wins into draws rather than draws into losses. 11 draws this season, as many as the whole of last season and already more than in 2013/14. The trend is blatant evidence of a considerable under-achievement, with the problem becoming worse.

We have been Wiganised!

The win statistics are disgraceful regardless of how many goals we've scored. The attacking isn't even the issue so no point rolling out stats about it.

Don't blame me. They're not my stats.

But I think that you'll agree, if we can score more goals than we concede, that gives us a good chance of winning games.

Signs since turn of the year

No mention of league games in post I answered

Ok mate xx

I don't believe we should sack our manager in the middle of the season based on 'probables' though. It should be based on definites. Our defence has shown signs of improvement since the turn of the year. A one-off semi-final defeat away at City doesn't change that.

From four league games in 2016 (Spurs at home, City away, Chelsea away, Swansea at home), we've conceded 7 goals. We've scored 5. We've picked up three points.

It's not good enough - I never said it was. But in the four games prior to that (Norwich away, Leicester at home, Newcastle away, Stoke at home) we conceded 8, and scored 7.

So, no, not loads of improvement, but it is there, especially considering the teams we have faced in the league so far in 2016...

I don't believe in sacking managers mid season either, but come the end of the season key components of this team will be off. Will Roberto have done enough to deserve the opportunity to reinvest the funds and build s new team? Unless something dramatic happens from now until May the answer is currently no.

4-0 villa, 6-2 sunderland etc.... stats are skewed. I deal in wins and there's been precious few. And our defending is getting worse.

If we score more goals than we concede, we're bound to win some games, aren't we?

I suppose it might be just the one. In which case, I hope it's the derby.

What an indignity - being beaten at home by a team going down.

I thought the below was what you'd replied to/taken that comment from. Apologies - it was @SaintDomingo who I had replied to with that. In my defence, I had mentioned league games, just got my posts mixed up.
