Roberto Martinez discussion

10 games in, 4 points from 4th without even getting out of 2nd gear. That tells me that we are doing fine. We could be doing better but it's not exactly a disastrous start is it

Well said, after a World Cup year with extra games in the Europa League. We are top of our group in Europe and not it to far off the pace in the league. It's about getting the balance of Europe and the league right. Don't forget this is Martinez's first European campaign. Slate him if he's still making the same mistakes in the years to come but every manager needs a learning curve

Yep below the likes of Stoke, Newcastle, West Ham, Southampton. He also spent £28m on a striker who I assume he has told to run the channels.

I posted that before today though mate so now we've just got a point away from home I'm gonna flip and fume even more because it's our devine right to slam teams 5-0 away from home every game and we are badly crap and Martinez out and Lukaku stole my wife from me.

So what if we are below them a third of the way into a season in which very few of their players went to the World Cup. Il just wait and see where we are at the end of the season. He's scored 20 goals in 48 games for us, not bad for a 20 year old. He's going to get better, his first touch has been poor.

I like martinez and was happy when he became manager, but i'm not so keen on the way we play in the final third, we are far to slow. All the keep ball and pulling the opposition out is great but we have to up the tempo with crisp passing and better off the ball movement in the final third, we look so easy to defend against except the odd move. Also when our centrebacks have the ball our midfield and fullbacks move to far away up the pitch, that is why we box ourselves in and get into trouble.

I think that's the thing that we need to work on the most, the tempo. Speed things up a little and we will be absolutely fine. I think this will come in time. I know from a personal point of view there has been a load of games last season and this where I think "christ this is so boring and pedestrian and boring to watch" going back and forth and sideways and back and so on. Then out of the Blue we have a passage of play where a great move comes of it and we score or create a chance and it makes sense. I don't think he intentionally tells them to take 10 years on the ball, the players are still a work in progress and add to that the opposition are basically scared of us and treat us as a top team who deserve respect then it's a lot harder to break down. Let's not get too downbeat even though it's frustrating. 10 years of Moyes and us getting it upfield sharpish ( which I didn't mind so I'm not slagging Moyes off ) it's still a tale of us getting used to it. It will work, it suits European football and once he has all the players at his disposal to play the way he wants we will be a force and our day will come.

Bang on.

I disagree.

Our goal scoring record disagrees.

It's true that when we aren't on form we do appear to become a little pedestrian but our frustrating worst is absolutely miles better than our worst under Moyes...

...and our best is bloody glorious.

I'm as frustrated as anyone but we're still well in the chase for European places in the league. West Ham and Southampton will have a down turn in form very soon and we'll start picking up more wins.

I've got plenty of issues with how Martinez has handled this season but he's a very good manager and he's still learning, as has been pointed out it's his first European campaign. By the end of the season I very much expect us to be around the top 6 and go deep into the Europa League.

Was told a story at the Lille game about Martinez in his Wigan days.
Couple of us were discussing the fact that for cup games we end up with some absolute whoppers sat amongst us who don't sit there throughout the season.....the type who moan and whinge all game and who contradict themselves by the minute. Anyhow, apparently some season ticket holder at Wigan wrote a letter to Roberto after every defeat telling him where he'd gone wrong and what he should be doing tactically etc. 99% of managers would have filed in the waste bin without even reading them and so it was a massive surprise to this guy when Martinez called him and asked him to come and see him. He spent three hours listening to him, and then absolutely astounded the nay-sayer with his absolute passion and understanding of every aspect of his team, the opposition and football in general. The guy simply couldn't comprehend the depth and accuracy of Roberto's knowledge, and fair play to him acknowledged the fact AMD apologised for his offensive letters. Roberto simply thanked him for being interested in Wigan - most would have tried to belittle him.

Based on the above, I'd absolutely love Roberto to read a few of the posts on here after the game and call a few into Finch Farm.
