Roberto Martinez discussion

I actually like this post, because it gives rise to other issues, most of which I agree with.

I don't think Martinez is a messiah. I think he deserves criticism for lots of things, a slight bit for yesterday.

Yesterday specifically however, the players as a collective are far more to blame imo.

I half agree mate.

Definitely on the players - they showed absolutely no mettle when needed in the last 15.

The case remains though that ultimately they looked just fine up until Lennon was taken off - in a sub that had no need to be made and if it came to the point where Lennon really couldn't complete another 5 mins (which would have made all the difference in killing the game off as at that point we were still creating plenty of chances), then he had smart, experienced and defensive options in Barry (one of our best players this year) and Baines on the bench.

Instead, he decided to bring on an inexperienced (in the PL) STRIKER(!?), when we have 10 men and knew we'd need to sustain some pressure but had so far handled the pressure very well.

Yep, fair play, I'd genuinely forgotten about WBA.
The more generic point remains, we've played well recently proving Martinez has the cajones
To be fair a lot of the time this season we have played pretty well, but we throw away loads of points which doesn't look good on the manager, his problem is he can't correct this problem and I don't believe he ever will. In away it's a shame because our general play is nice to watch most of the time, but what's most important is points and we aren't getting nowhere near enough.

We are just as crap as a team that just sit eleven men behind hoping for a draw.

Defence and attack are equally as important and if you can't do one your as bad as a team that can't do the other. Just because attacks are more pleasing on the eye does not mean we are good. Martinez is not good enough. We are not good enough. We might have decent players but tactically we have been awful for two seasons. We are just as bad as last season. I don't care if we look Fifa Street on the pitch this season we are still crap. It's a results game. Martinez doesn't do results.

We played very well yesterday.

agree mate and for 75 minutes I'd say it was our performance of the season.

I also think many people - whether they want RM out or not - agree - @Tubey who is never afraid to criticise being a perfect case in point.

Great team set up and a lot of resilience shown.

The fact remains, unfortunately and this is coming from somebody who has defended RM to the hilt and still will do when I believe he isn't at fault, that the substitution of Niasse for Lennon was, quite frankly, absurd given the situation of the game and our knack of throwing away two-goal leads, and even more so considering the other options at his disposal.

We saw the very best and worst of RM yesterday and ultimately that's what has piled a heck of a lot more pressure on him.

With 10 men.
We ran out of steam.
It happens.

We only ran out of steam after the sub mate.

We showed no signs of running out of steam before that and the collapse after conceding was a disgrace - 10 men or not.

We should and would have won that game yesterday had RM not decided to make that sub. I'm very confident of that.

I have no problem with people thinking this. I see it differently which is obvs fine.

What I think is bizarre is when something goes wrong, and there are a magnitude of reasons for it, the Martinez thread gets the most traction and exaggeration.

Martinez has to make some alterations. He has made many recently and we've found relative consistency. Yesterday's sub was a strange one. Granted.
But he didn't send Funes Mori out there with the remit of "don't head those crosses aimed at Andy Carroll" nor did he instruct our players to allow Payet to put a free cross in. In fact, he quite obviously told them the opposite based on the first 60mins.

Jagielka defended so well yet his partner let him down. Is Jagielka being coached and managed by different people than Funes Mori? Of course not.

There are a lot of things at play here and they should all get the criticism they deserve. Including but not exclusively the manager.

If course we ran out of steam after the sub... Which conincided with the end of the game, the furthest event away from the sending off.

It's fatigue! Understandable fatigue.

Coupled with a strange sub, poor finishing, poor defending.

All at play.
