Roberto Martinez discussion

I fully agree, a win on saturday would have shown a lot of fans Martinez has the nous to beat a form team with one less player.

Instead his tactical changes and lack of reaction to what was happening AGAIN is what cost us the game. He had fair warning with Carroll coming on, he did nothing to counter that, which shows the difference between a good manager in bilic who could change tactics, and one that should be on borrowed time who thought keep doing the same would be good enough.

Tbf mate, it wasn't a lack of reaction. He reacted fine to that Carroll sub at half time. What could he have done to counter that other than what he did with the players we had available?

What messed the game up was when he decided to make a change when there was no need for it. So if anything it was actually his reaction that conspired to our defeat...

Any chance McCarthy?!

Any chance Barkley & Oviedo?! Funes Mori on his way to the beach?

Besic very slow to react, Barry didn't react at all, if you watch the goal again he watches the ball the whole time from Creswell to Carroll's header, he doesn't once look over his shoulder and his reaction after Payet scored is nonexistent.

This is why, for all RM's faults, the players have to take responsibility as well.

Barkley's attempted block for that second goal was a disgrace.

In fairness to them, they were knackered due to Kev's stupidity, but still...

Everton are underperforming in the Premier League at the moment.

Former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live Sport on Monday evening (March 7)that the current Everton squad is not good enough to finish in the top four or the top five of the Premier League this season.

“No chance that squad is good enough for top four or five,” said Townsend. “I don’t believe the Everton squad is. I would agree they are underachieving where they are at the moment, but I honestly don’t think.”

“West Ham, I think have got better players at the moment than what Everton have,” added the former Republic of Ireland international. “I don’t think Everton are a top four, top five team.”

Everton are 12th in the Premier League table at the moment with 38 points from 28 matches.

The Merseyside outfit are as many as 12 points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

It is clear that the Toffees are underperforming this season, but the squad at Roberto Martinez’s disposal is not as good as some of the clubs above them.

The likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Chelsea are all above the Blues, and rightly so.

Everton have some good players, such as Leighton Baines, John Stones, Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley, but overall the squad is not good enough to challenge for a Champions League place."

I know we sometimes overrate our players, but West Ham having a better squad than us? Nah not having that one bit.

Brilliant post - when you see it like this, it just isn't bad luck. Poor discipline, poorly setup, I mean the bottom photo there is a disgrace. 7 Everton players + goalkeeper in shot (notwithstanding Coleman being miles out of position) vs 4 West Ham players, and they still get a free cross and a free header.

It comes from the way we are setup and zero leaders on the pitch. Need big changes in the summer but may as well start with the manager now

Townsend the meff is an out-and-out Kopite, confirmed wall-pushing beaut. It's like expecting an informed opinion on Everton from Aldo

All good...enjoy your view...I have mine...Lennon was gassed and was not the reason we lost.

Playing with a man sent off and a passenger for the last 12 mins was the reason we lost. We looked very comfortable defending crosses until the Niasse sub although defending crosses is obviously another issue that Martinez has failed to address all season.

Andy Toensend makes Michael Iwen look insightful. By far the stupidest pundit around. He just inhales whatever is on Sky sports and spews it back out. One of the upsides of ITV losing the champions league is not listening to him droning on.

Our squad is miles better than West Hams in almost every position (Payet aside).

Nah mate I do think Townsend's got a point.

I wouldn't say W.Ham are better than us, but at the same time this squad we have is overrated as much as they're underachieving. A lot of youngsters who are still yet to achieve real consistency (Barkley getting there and Lukaku obviously stepping up his game massively but even so his look at the penalty miss for evidence...) and a lot of older players who have clearly reached their peak.

It's not an excuse as we should still be top 7, but it's why the players also have to take the responsibility as well as the manager and why RM - for me - gets until season's end. If he does go then - at that time - it won't bother me as long as we get a replacement who will keep up RM's good things but cut out the bad - rather than change the system entirely.

This. It bemuses me that apologists like @ilikecheese continue to spout absolute excrement in desperate defence of their beloved Catalan...their man of straw. R Martinez's track record is stupendously terrible. That he helms Everton Football Club's XI lends me despair. That the cultists on this forum continue to lend him succour, I can only ascribe to cognitive dissonance.
Pass the Kool-Aid...

Nah it's called having a different opinion mate. I like you and respect your views but the fact remains that airing an opposing view on a supporters forum isn't "cognitive dissonance".
You've got your head stuck in the clouds as much as any member of the cult. Different cloud, different view. Absolutely fine.

how many of our first team would you put in spurs first team? gone for spurs as they are team who have skirted around top four and dont have a huge budget

i dont think it would be many, this might show how we are poss overrating our players

Yes but compared to Chris Sutton he talks sense...

Adrian - better keeper than either of ours

Right back - Coleman
Centre halves - Reid is as good as Jags, Collins is very solid and experienced. Stones and Mori both excellent players but still probably an even contest and W.Ham edge it in experience.
Left-back - Cresswell is currently in much better form than Baines and is better than Bryan (as much as I love him)

Midfield - McCarthy and Barkley get in their side. Noble is a rat but he's been brilliant for them this season. Song still has quality in him and Kouyate is a great box to box player.

Winger - Payet (obviously). Del/Kev quality but inconsistent. Antonio is tailor made for the physicality and pace of the Prem. Lanzini is a quality player as well.

Striker - yeh we boss that one but they have four strikers who can all reasonably expect to be first choice when fit.

I'd say they're pretty even.

Got to say Mkrudden, I'm quite enjoying life on the fence.

I've defended and still will defend RM for the things he gets right, and I still want him to stay. But if the results don't pick up sharpish then ultimately he will have to go.

They don't need a huge budget though because they've spent so much down the years.

Poch came in and trimmed the fat from that squad before adding in his own style and one or three or four younger players either from the academy or signings.
