Roberto Martinez discussion

Enjoy 10th next season. The mistake you have made is assuming people thought they could actually get Martinez out. I don't think many did. A lot wanted him out, but there's a huge difference between that and thinking they could get him out. So you've accurately predicted that the Everton board settled for mediocrity and took the easy cheap route of not firing the manager. Congratulations what a crystal ball you have, no one would have expected that from our brilliant board. You've also predicted that we didn't get relegated, something that we're better at avoiding than any other premier league side. Again another astonishing prediction that no one saw coming.

Transfer war chest? Ha ok, thought this was Everton.

If proper Evertonians chortle along with a man who has now blamed the Europa league, the World Cup, soft tissue injuries, mental fatigue, confidence, and 'bad luck' all before blaming himself for a season of woeful elimination from all cup competitions and a flirt with relegation finishing behind Stoke and Swansea, then the fans will continue to get the club they deserve.

But yes let's all continue to argue about who blinked first when we were 3 points above the drop zone meanwhile our board builds to accept another trophy less season of midtable mediocrity. I'm sure the boards of Liverpool Spurs City etc are all doing the same (they're not, they're holding reviews of their managers for under performance, imagine that). Least the plotters were silenced though hey? (They're not, all of the problems this season remain the same, it was never about relegation or whether Martinez would be fired or not. This will all come up again next season as we continue to under perform).

Want to predict for next season that Everton won't fire Martinez and we won't get relegated? Go ahead, easiest two predictions anyone could make.
oh get her

He wont be sacked because we'll be top 6/7 next season.

Maybe you could explain how this feller we hired who got a record 72 points total and 5th place is inevitably going to have Everton 'underperforming' again next season?

What are your expectations for next season? What would represent overperformance and what would be underperformance?

With the squad we have and the current state of the league 7th should be the bare minimum. People will make the argument about the other 6 having more money but in recent seasons we have finished ahead of one of Liverpool Spurs and United. No reason we shouldn't be jostling in that company (United excepted if they try and buy the title). Over achievement would be top 4 and a trophy. It's a fine line I know between achievement and under achievement at that level but there's only really 7 decent teams in this league and we are in that number. Finishing 11th when United Liverpool and Spurs look like jokes is an absolute disgrace. Should easily have been 5th or 6th this season.

Cos he no longer has a Moyes team ethic to fall back on?

...meanwhile, in the next door cave those same archaeologists will find walls covered in "72 points, miracle of Goodison, 72 points, pass pass pass pass pass pass pass, 72 points, agricultural hoofball, 72 points".

They'll naturally assume it was the decorations of a madman.

I've been through it loads of times. Novelty factor, few injuries, nullifying games with defensive football then winning them with Osman Pienaar Deulofeu off the bench, a rare high number of direct free kicks solo goals, good luck.

This season has shown though that with injuries he will not adapt the team. Defensive resilience went and when he turned to the bench? Nothing. Jagielka Pienaar Osman won't be here for ever, what strides has he made to replace them? You talk about dinosaur football but the five best technical footballers in the squad (Stones, Gibson, Osman Pienaar, Baines, even Mirallas) are all Moyes players. Martinez's best buys (Lukaku, McCarthy, Besic) have to play a certain way as they have no creativity. The rest of his buys have been a joke. He's putting out lineups that the average fan can see are not going to score goals. A midfield that doesn't create, wide players who are strikers or midfielders, and uncreative players in the number 10 role (that's when he's not playing three holding mids in Goodison derbies).

It's not a disgrace really. It's just frustrating under achievement.

A "disgrace" and "it's not acceptable" usually denote self entitled young British people who mirror others annoying complaining methods.

A disgrace is the controlled demise of the NHS. A disgrace is causing the death of 39 fans and trying to blame Chelsea.

Stones was wanted by Martinez at Wigan, Barkley was given his chance by Martinez after being ignored as wasteful by Moyes, Deulofeu you conveniently ignored, he brought in Eto'o one of the most gifted players of his generation, Lennon - technically poor?

The thing about Moyes is that he didn't use the talent he brought in. He brought them here and made them functional, which is why Martinez was easily able to get a new tune out of them in his first season.
