Roberto Martinez discussion

What's the point being made here? That he's not in control of the squad of players he has under him?

If so, I dont think it shows that at all. He's dealt with Distin in no uncertain fashion. He's cooked: stick a fork in him because he's gone and was gone at Christmas. Baines is a nothing story that you'd find anywhere at any club. I dont see that as being a major deal whatsoever that he was surprised at being asked to play in an unfamiliar position. Lukaku and Mirallas are coming to us from foreign papers and who knows what the actual words and intent was. Garbutt was a poor one to make, naive and disrespectful...which tells me a lot about his character and why i wouldn't give a flying one if/when he goes. He's a wrongun, imo.

Still, all these scenarios of players with loose tongues took place under Moyes' time here and his grip over the squad was not quesioned in this fashion, so why with this feller? Because he doesn't gurn his face like a lunatic and scream in players' faces?

Martinez intimated a few days ago that he'd move for low hanging fruit type of signings early, and then look to tie up others later in the window:

That's hopefully where Cleverly fits in and he has cash to spend in key areas on specialist role players.

You want Cleverly?

Yet, you determined that all by yourself.

The suggestion is there's a growing number of players making comments that aren't great for the manager.

Not comparative at all.

This didn't happen under Moyes;

For me, there's too many players in too short a time making digs or politely expressing "surprise" towards the manager.

Martinez is going to be defined by how he starts the season.

Get off to a flyer, he buys himself a mid-season slump in the league if we're maintaining a good cup challenge and will get a full season one way or the other with a proper, full and fair assessment at the end of it by the direction we look like we're heading.

Get off to a slow start again like this season or worse and the knives will be out and even the more ardent supporters of Bobby will be struggling to back him.

My position is see it as one very good season and one below average season. He effectively starts from a neutral position for me, I'll get a feeling one way or the other by the summer transfer activity.

My only apprehension is I just don't, realistically, see Ferguson as being cut out to be a premiership manager, definitely not with his ocmplete lack of experience right now, so the idea that he's potentially the lined up replacement scares the crap out of me.

I don't think Duncan is being lined up to be our next manager. He will be one day, but he needs a lot more experience first.

FWIW, I reckon Martinez will get until around xmas.

There does seem to be a fracture in communication at times. What game was it where Baines was part of the punditry team and couldn't answer a basic question about set pieces? Seemed odd at the time.

Then there was the long interview with Hibbert in the London Review of Books where he thought he was a mixed doubles badminton player.

Maybe it's a language thing.

FA Cup with Wigan, relegation not celebrated.

The comments are par for the course, I'd say. I dont think Martinez is trying to break the spirit of players by muzzling them. Mirallas is the one that's been long running. He wants away, so there's not surprise there's some friction building up there.

Moyes: there were many instances of his authority being questioned: Anichebe, Van Der Meyde, Drenthe, Beckford, Rooney and lots besides). It comes with the territory.

How do you set up at corners was the question. Baines didn't inspire confidence with his answer.

No he didn't. His answer was along the lines of err, erm, err. It's kind of up to the lads.

I can't do it justice as it went on for about 2 1/2 minutes.

But to followers of the Dear Leader, I suppose that might translate into incisive tactical instruction.
Baines said that they were briefed before every game.

As he wasn't at the briefing, he didn't know.

It makes sense to me.
