Roberto Martinez discussion

Anyone else think him blaming the pitch for the fact that we suddenly turned into amateur footballers was a bit of a weak excuse? He's basically just told the rest of the league that on a pitch that's cut up on a few patches we can't play. He's got to be expecting worse at Stevenage like?

Still love him though!

Hopefully this is a lesson to Martinez.

Never compromise our style, especially when it's been the main reason for our success this season.

See Dave, you can be a good poster haha. I agree.

Happens a couple of times per year!

He's just protecting his players. He knows they were rubbish relatively speaking, and probably that his own decision making was not top draw.

I'll tell you what i think: I reckon Martinez let Mel get inside his head for this game. He mentioned the transition in mentality he expected at West Brom with Mel's arrival. He was given the runaround by Betis in pre-season by his team when we were first finding our feet with the new system, and I think we played differently last night because of that.

Just a thought.

I think you are bang on. The **** house pitch (I referred to it within 5 mins of the game starting as "like playing on a bouncy castle") was a secondary factor to our loss. Roberto was fearful of the Pepe factor and that stemmed from that Real Betis game .

I am still somewhat nonplussed at how Leon was kept on for so long when Naismith was on the bench. RM was like a possum in the headlights last night. Pepe was changing things a lot and we reacted by doing...nothing.

I would have liked Naismith on sooner, seeing as we were forced into hoofing the ball regardless.
I think he could have done something given more than 3 minutes.

Only one team in it in the first half (us) we cut through them had possession and only hit it long when required but you could see the usual crispness was missing - probably still in Tenerife.

The second half at 1-0 up and them not at the races would have seen us spank them normally but deffo nowt in the tank hence the desperate hoofball.

Bad day at the office but we didn't lose it.

fuk those mid season holidays right off.

Tim Sherwood had TWO subs left today with the likes of Capoue, Chadli and Sigurdsson (roughly 25m worth of players) on his bench but he was absolutely devoid of ideas on how to turn their game around. End result? 1-1 v Hull.

On the other hand, Martinez had the likes of "Spurs reject" Pienaar, fans un-favourite Naismith and fisherman Tony Hibbert at his disposal. Low and behold, because of tactical awareness, Everton came from behind to win 2-1.

The Bobby fan club is welcoming new members.

The little Catalan is a freaking genius.

Yes indeed! I was on the Pereira bandwagon but never doubted Bobby M, proper work by him today got us a huge win. Starting lineup left something to be desired, but there's something of a magic touch in the subs he did. And when you look at those stats you gotta say we were spot on tactically, 9 times out of 10 we're out of that game with a big win and a clean sheet.

Sherwood is an utter fraud anyway.

Would love to smash them next week.

I agree. So often, scoring the first goal is key for us. If McGeady's shot finds the back of the net instead of hitting the post, I think we go on to win big.

Made mistakes in the derby (hand forced more than anything though I suppose) but I still hearted him afterwards. Did the right things to shake it up in the second half today and it paid off. Nice one Bobby :)

He made one mistake: playing players in volume who were unfit.
I think he was right to point out today in Football Focus that the method of playing in the opposition's half was the correct one, just that on that occasion was dependent on bodies making the recovery to carry it out.
