Martinez consistently gets his subs right. That's the mark of someone who knows what the hell he is doing.
I don't think he can be called a genius today.
Villa set out to play a super high defensive line with a very flat back four that is almost in a straight line across 90% of the time.
This setup is incredibly easy to exploit if you have midfielder willing to run in deep and play through ball to them.
We certainly have the players with such abilities to exploit them. However, we had Mirallas playing with his back towards goal and barkley sitting too deep to exploit their back line.
All we did is to build up from the flanks with little success.
If we had play more short one two right in front of their flat back four, we would have see a more comfortable win.
We were lucky today imo.

They had 3 shots on goal the entire game lid. They were lucky, not us. Fully deserved 3 points.

First half is just a scouting mission.
This is the way villa and most team will play against us. If we struggle to find ways to break down a flat and high defensive setup. Then it's something very worrying.
Yes it's a deserved win. But hardly an easy win.

Never said it was easy. But imagine if Aidey's shot was a few inches the right 5 minutes in. We might have won 3-0 since they wouldn't have been able to park the bus.
We were a bit sluggish in the 1H, but if you want to win things you have to fight through and get a result. Look at Man U. Moyes goes out there every week like he did with us and talk about how well they played and lost. Guess what? You have to get results.

Yes, but every time an Everton player looked up to make that pass in the first half a Villa player was in their face. That was basically their tactic. There were a few runs in behind not picked out because of that extreme pressing.
