Roberto Martinez discussion

I've said before that I think that the final 20 mins of that game, the first home fixture, set the tone for much of the season.

It was a devastating blow. We outplayed the medias best footballing team in the country for 70 minutes, and then lost a 2 goal lead.

It's the only time I've seen us outperform Arsenal at Goodison since the 80's. That's why I've still got Martinez' back ;)

We also need to remember that during his first season we had 3 draws v some pretty average opposition on the bounce - and a terrible half against West Ham before we turned it round and didn't look back. Last season it was just the opposite - 2 x draws and then a thumping in a crazy game v chelsea which we never recovered from.

Confidence is huge in sport - still have faith in Martinez, we just need to grit in and get some results before we get a few players in. To be fair we have had some terrible luck with injuries pre-season... Gibson, Besic, Mcgeady, Oviedo, Baines, pienaar, Deulofeu....all of those players could make a difference.

Our first 11 on paper is a match for anyone on their day as they proved two seasons ago and as I am sure they will show again. I think it's obvious that lack of funds is a real issue (and an argument for a different place) but since he has been here he has tied down all of our major players, including Mccarthy and Mirallas last week so he must be showing the players something for them to want to stay. Our squad now must be better/bigger than at any time under Moyes? I remember going on tour around goodison park and looking at the squad photos as they got smaller every year!

We have the best young english centre back for years, a £28m striker who has the potential to be unplayable, Ross Barkley who people were raving about being a £50m player two seasons ago and a core of solid young players - Macarthy, Besic, Deulofeu, Cleverley, Galloway, Browning - then a smattering of experience - should be a perfect combination!!! Maybe this should be in the positive thread!

Did we not demolish them the season before aw well.....a 3-0 victory?

Those kind of attacking teams aren't our biggest problem.

It is with the lesser lights and the "park the bus" teams where we are coming unstuck.

Maybe so mate. Maybe so....

However, if you can accept that Martinez is capable of going head to head with Van Gaal, Wenger, and whoever Wolfsburg's manager is, then surely he's not the clown some are making him out to be?

When you extend a bar on outlawed words to stuff like 'cabal' I mean where are we going on a forum when that's mooted?

Swear filter/bans on swear words etc = entirely reasonable. Policing descriptive words like cabal? This cant be a serious proposition.

If I were a mod I'd be more concerned about people stepping over the mark in debates like this and labelling someone mentally deranged (I've done it and had it done to me). That I could see the reasoning of.

I really dont know what to say to your post, honestly. Does it mean simple descriptive words when attributed to any group is verboten now and that a prescribed glossary of acceptable ones are the order of the day?

I dont want to tell people how to do their job - and I'm well aware of how much of a headache administrating an issue like this can be - but I think I'd shut the thread down first rather than try and strike out inoffensive words.

Nothing to do with the meaning of the word itself.
It's to do with using it purely to try and wind people up, in the same way that you both used plotters last season.

You're quite capable of arguing your point without deliberately trying to wind people up.

He is neither as bad as some make him out to be nor is he as good as others do.

Saturday showed the best and worst of Martinez era Everton.

Boring first half......sparkling in the second.

Deluded and desperate. There's only a handful of cranks on an Everton forum grinding their teeth over a 2-2 draw on the opening day of the season. No one who matters is reading the script your reading. NOBODY.

Don't get your hopes up. Roberto will be here for the full five years. You and the rest of the cabal will give yourselves heart attacks at this rate. Just sit back and enjoy the football Martinez and the team will serve up. If he was going it'd have been last season.

I actually said I wanted him to turn it around.

There is only one crank on here. You are given facts, 6 wins out of 20 at home and you ignore it.

Putting you on ignore now, you are a really poor, mouth frothing, tiresome and tedious act.

Adios.

Ok, fair enough.

Best if I step out of this thread for now.

I honestly think Moyes had the same problem. I've got no idea why, but I swear down, we've never played boss for a whole 90 minutes in god knows how long.

Oh, we're counting last season now are we? I was told last season not to do that.

Make your mind up.
There was a contrast in playing styles between last season and his first season. Saturday was exactly the same flawed way of playing as we had to endure all last season.

You will back him no matter what, I doubt you even believe yourself half the time.

My worry is that we do play a patient game when we would do better being more direct but as was evident at the weekend teams only need 30% possession to score 2 goals against us, we seem to have a soft centre. We still managed to score 2, if we could tighten up at the back, that is a team effort not just defence, I think we could get back to how we were the season before last....
