Roberto Martinez discussion

Agree his best position might be further back. Think he's bounced around too many clubs to warrant a large transfer fee, only time will tell. Can see him leaving Stoke in 18 months for 6m. I'd go all out for Yarma, think his attitude is spot on.
We really should have and in the end I think we did. I just think we left it too late and by then bigger clubs had missed their targets and were interested. Now I'm not saying we would have got him doing that because I do think the owner also wanted to keep him almost at all costs. It's all hindsight I guess and I don't blame Martinez although it would have better to know sooner rather than later. It was just one of those things.

Played another blinder in that press conference. Saying all the right things at the moment, and looks to have that real fire in the belly that he had in that first season. Great to see, and let's hope the results reflect it. A win this weekend would be massive for us and for him personally.

I thought we did offer all the money Kiev wanted, but it all came down to their owner not wanting to let him go.
I think we offered it eventually however by then it was so close to the UEFA Cup draw and we had missed out on Shaqiri. It probably didn't matter but with this deal I wouldn't have negotiated. I would have just given them what they asked.

Same with Moyes

All part of the interview process a couple of summers back. Kenwright would have done his research on Martinez and whether he was stable and a safe pair of hands for him to place his faith in at times like these.

Anyone looking for this chairman to be reaching hastily for the eject button on Martinez if we have a sharp dip in form again are kidding themselves.

I think the last few days has underlined how close Martinez and Kenwright are. Rightly or wrongly.
But it's not Davek anything to do with the owner or the manager. We as a club can't attract the very top talent until they run out of options unless we pay over the odds both transfers and wages.

It's like us and West Brom regarding someone like Johnny Evans. Evans is waiting on us to make a decision on Stones before he commits to West Brom because he would prefer to go with us. That's just how the football pyramid works.

The clubs that do their business early unless they are the very top clubs end up with a load of over priced rubbish like when Spurs and Liverpool did it. Unfortunately it always leaves us in this situation were our main target rests on a big gamble. Yarmolenko this year. Nolito last year. etc.

The year the gamble pays off like when we got Rom we have a good season.

I think Martinez has handled the Stones saga brilliantly. Stuck to his guns and shown nothing but dignity, at the same time sending the message that he won't be pushed around by the superpowers!

I had the discussion with my brother yesterday, who is essentially a fence sitter on the question.

What I put to him was, do you think Barkley, Stones, Oviedo, Naismith, Browning, Pennington, Garbutt, Galloway etc have all come on under Martinez? For all his other faults he looks able to improve players to me, which is essential.

Given we have so many players under 22/23 if he can continue that process we are only going to improve. First and foremost he is a good coach, who improves players over time. This isn't always a linear process though.

I remember when he first came, when asked about Barkley, he said he didn't mind him making a mistake, as long as he learnt from the mistake, and if it was a mistake trying to do the right thing, he didn't stop looking for the ball. That is a microcosm of the strengths and weaknesses of Martinez.

He gives young players opportunities, and doesn't go for quick and easy solutions if they make mistakes, he allows them to play through it and work it out for themselves. This will see them come out the other end stronger, but in the interim period there may be some mistakes to rectify.

That was last season for me. A massive decline that we needed to learn from and improve upon. But a decline that saw Stones and Barkley cement places as 20 year olds, a 20 year old striker lead the line and players such as Galloway and Garbutt make their way into the team.

To accommodate that experienced pro's were shunted. With young players comes inconsistency. But I always harp back to the two things. 1) Has Martinez improved those players. and 2) Given the amount of good quality young players we have, how much further can they go?

I wasn't specifically talking about transfers, more the personal relationship Kenwright and Martinez have. I sense BK, after the tumult of losing Moyes who was his wingman, now feels comfortable with Martinez in the same way. Roberto has stepped up the past few weeks and fronted the organisation for Kenwright: shielding him from criticism and giving praise to him at the appropriate moment.

Kenwright prizes that highly in a manager. He needs that shield. Moyes provided it, Martinez has truly begun to fill the void left by Moyes this summer.
