Roberto Martinez discussion

I didn't equate beating them. I said we beat them with a load of injuries while also leaving quality players on the bench. When they needed to use their depth all they had were kids who didn't look up to the job. I was comparing the two squads using that game as an example.

Rooney has been out of form for a year and Utd have been struggling for even longer. I think they will find it difficult to score goals unless Memphis and Martial are as special as Utd fans hope they are.

Yarmolenko is better than Hazard and Hazard is over-rated along with the whole premiership in general.

Martinez on the effect of the Europa League programme. Bottom line says it all and why season two has to be seen through that prism.

The Europa League group stages kick-off tonight and Martinez believes Everton’s Premier League form will improve after the demands of playing in the Europa League contributed to an 11th place finish in May.

But the Catalan is itching for a return to the continent after talking Everton to the last 16 of the Europa League last season.

“It’s huge,” Martinez said.

“You don’t just need to prepare for the Europa League now, you think about it when you are assembling your squad, making the signings and looking at the physical outputs in training.

“It affects everything.

“We benefited from that experience, and we want to be involved in Europe again.

“But I think doing it in stages is beneficial.

“The league games now in the first half of the season mean a lot more than they did last season, which is only natural. When you are in Europe, the reality is that it takes some focus away from the league fixtures.”

Well yeah , all teams who play in the europa league go on awful runs of form between November and jan whilst playing the crappest, slowest most boring pointless "posession" football known to man until the players and fans get sick of it and demand the change everyone bar the manager and his sycophantic supporters could see was needed.

Its not Roberto's fault.

Let me know when it's all over

Three more opportunities soon;

Thursday 1 October Liverpool v FC Zion
Sunday 4 October Everton v Liverpool

Saturday 17 October Everton v Manchester United

Tuesday 20 October Arsenal v Bayern Munich
Saturday 24 October Arsenal v Everton

It's a shame both Arsenal and the Shoite are at home in their European games, but it's still an opportunity to get at tired legs.

Got the impression, listening to a few gunners on the radio, that Arsene rested a few players tonight with one eye on Chelsea at the weekend, wonder if he will still be doing that by the time Bayern comes around?

And tonight Liverpool are resting Benteke, Milner, Clyne, Skrtel, Lovren and Leiva away to Bordeaux - but I expect some of them still to travel. Will they be able to rest them all against Zion?

Only when he moves to a top league will we be able to make a call on this but for now he has a far better goals and assists record at both club and international level from more or less the same position on the pitch.

I'm just looking forward to all the vaulting opportunities. This reminds me of all the morons who said Payet would be a flop and not worth the money.

When the teams have been fairly equal in terms of ability, Liverpool have still had the edge in derbies because despite dismissing the game as our cup final, they always turn up for a fight. With Carragher and Gerrard both gone, that will probably change this season, so I expect to see Everton have a good go at turning them over next month.

Europe is not the reason we did badly last season, but it is an easy excuse I guess.
Everyone in the game reckons the EL is a kiss of death for a teams season in the PL, and now we have the man closest to Everton's players confirming the combination was difficult to adapt to.

It's pretty conclusive.
