Roberto Martinez discussion

Spot on, mate.

I think if Moyes had served up decent football he'd have been missed a lot more. The fact is he served up more muck than he did football.

All you can reasonably ask of a manager labouring under the weight of a boardroom determined to take money out of the squad rather than put into it is that they operate around the European placings, make a good fist of it in the cups and play a brand of football that makes us proud. Box ticked three times on Martinez.

2 times, I would say. I don't think we did anything to be proud of in the cups this year.

I thought that myth was dispelled last year, when Moyes finally tried it himself and we gained a place in the league, if I'm honest.

But yeah it's a huge improvement on that score.
There were periods of good football during most seasons under Moyes, but he never stuck with it. Neville always found his way back into midfield eventually.

He's going to have to keep bringing quality players in. Doesn't matter how pretty the football is. We will go downhill if we're spending our outgoing player fees on average players.

The away draw was very unkind. If we had a home draw we'd have been at Wembley, I think. That said, Moyes had a VERY tough draw in 2009 and did remamrkably well. So no real excuses, I suppose.

Still, QF in his first season is not awful, it's very decent in fact. More progress in the cups is, of course, required.

Martinez is an upgrade on Moyes though, no question.

The three big places with room for improvement under Moyes, I thought were derbies, cups and style.

I'm very happy with the improvement in style but the results in the other two areas have been pretty grim and that's what stops me from declaring him an upgrade so soon.

I hope he'll turn out to be but it's too early to call him one so far, I think.

But yeah, unkind draw in the fa cup.

I actually find him pretty conservative. We're 2-1 down at the Emirates with 17 minutes left to play. Do we still need two holding midfielders or is it time to bring another striker on?

He seems to have this rule that you must keep Barry and McCarthy in the pitch at all times

We sure as feck weren't winning a thing with muppet Moyes in charge!

The question about whether Moyes was good enough and the question about whether Martinez is good enough is entirely separate and unrelated.

Like I said, I think Moyes failed here and I'm glad he's gone but that doesn't mean his replacement is necessarily a good one. I think Martinez will prove to be but if he does or if he doesn't is completely unrelated to whether Moyes was good or not.

Still think he is a breath of fresh air for this club and the majority of us are more than happy with the style he has brought with him. Like people have mentioned before, this summers transfers will be a massive test for him. Doesn't help that we have ageing players and to replace them with a limited budget will not prove easy. I have faith in him and his philosophy.

We came close a couple of times but close doesn't win you trophies...

I think we really ought to target the League Cup next season. That has to be the best chance of silverware.

Keep trying to remind myself we are a club in transition.

Doesn't make today's result any easier to take but gives a little hope for the future.

It was very unlikely that Martinez would improve us vastly in one season. In fact it was more likely we'd get worse.

There is hope. But a lot of patience is required. I see a fair few more days like today and the derby still to come.

probably important considering we either play with no full backs or no center half! amazing that we aren't conceding hatfuls every week with a back 2

I like martinez though, you can see he's trying to lift the inferiority complex that we had under moyes

Apart from the obvious terrible result in the last derby, the Goodison Derby was pretty much controlled by us and we played very well, creating a lot of chances. Still, it is results based and I take your point on that. I lambasted Moyes on his record, so a two games no win record for Martinez is not acceptable either. The cup runs were acceptable rather than a Moyeseque capitulation. Room for improvement, of course. The style side is not in doubt and that wont change.

Overall it's a no brainer for me: Martinez has us playing football again and is in the process of amassing a points total I never thought he'd get to in season one. What i would say is that I want to see him and the team come out fighting for the remaining games and not drift. The games to the end of the season will tell us a lot about what character we can expect from Martinez's Everton teams.

I'd say the football isn't too dissimilar from what Moyes served up when things were okay. The problem we had under him was the style dropped to desperate levels when a couple of injuries kicked in. I don't think that'll happen under Martinez and we'll be a lot more consistent in that respect.
