Yes and there is no reason it can't work at Everton if need be. Martinez said he played that formation because of the type of players he had at the club, in other words the 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 systems, he felt, were not suitable with the players he had available to him. People are being a little too quick to diss that system because it got wigan relegated and ignore the fact that injuries and not as good players on Championship wages were the main cause.
Prays you're right

The more you think about the wages Moyes was on now in retrospect, the more unreal it gets. Everton are going to make that compo package up with Whelan at a stroke in the first year by handing Martinez a reduction in our manager salary.

And had we appointed one of several managers available free of any compo whatsoever, that money could have gone on a new player's transfer fee and wages.

Picking Martinez and paying compo, instead of picking Pereira, Bielsa, Girard etc for free, is a silly move from a purely financial perspective. He would have to be a FAR better manager than the other candidates to warrant that decision.

listening to the hysteria about Mourinho has made me feel really positive. if you ignore all the 'I will kill myself if Martinez gets the job' reactions, then seems pretty balanced, and I am just glad that we have avoided the messiah route, particularly the returning messiah which is as near as you get to a guarantee of disappointment. No talk similar to the likes of Rodgers being the new Shankly, but enough people committing support that I don't think he will start with a burden he doesn't need. I was excited about Roberto the year before, then worried about him this year, but it starts now not in the past and its much easier to learn and get it right at a stable club than a sinking ship.

That'd have been false economy, though. Those managers would have expected to pick up Moyes' wedge, so there'd be even more outlay. Also they'd have had their staff to be compensated for.

So why have Man Utd handed Moyes £5m a year if he is so useless?

Moyes was on £3m a year at Everton and managed us to the 5th best average finish of any club in his decade in charge.
Martinez on £2m a year and averaged 16th in his time in charge.

If we finish 7th rather than 6th we'll lose more than £1m in prize money. I suspect Moyes will look like even more of a bargain in years to come

The list of the top 40 highest paid managers in Europe has been posted several times over the last couple weeks. Moyes was something like 17th on £3.2m pa, Bielsa was something like 37th on £1.5m pa IIRC. Pereira and Girard weren't even on it. There is no evidence to suggest that they would cost more than Martinez, but there is evidence to state categorically that they wouldn't cost us £2m in compensation.

Martinez is bringing in 4 or 5 staff to replace those we lost to Man U, as would any incoming appointee. These replacements would cost money regardless of which manager we appointed.

In summary, Martinez will definitely cost compensation plus wages. That will add up to more than the wages for an out-of-contract candidate, unless the likes of Pereira were demanding MORE than Moyes was being paid. Which is unlikely.

Guy on the radio said Martinez looks at everything so he will be scouring the transfer rumour threads on every Everton site as we talk

Maybe dave and good point you make, however the proof will be in the pudding is will he be able to match his league positions as IMO that's where moyes paid for his salary. I don't think nobody else will have acheived what moyes acheived given the crap backing from the board. I'm quite looking forward to what he has to bring to the table and I little excited for the season ahead.

Don't think Davek says Moyes is useless at all, could you quote that bit please? He (like others) just think he is vastly over paid.

Everyone is overpaid in football.

However Moyes was clearly good value for money compared to his peers.
