So this argument is: Everton failed to capitalize on using Donovan to build the brand, so they should also fail to capitalize on Martinez? I don't understand the logic. He may not be Ferguson or Donovan or Pele, but then again Everton don't have any of those guys. The crux of my statement is that I don't see a better face of the franchise than Martinez and so I think Everton is right to start using him.
I know what you're saying. I just dont see how it works its way out concretely. These arguments about 'expanding the brand' are always very vaguely drawn out. It becomes a mantra and an article of faith.

Well...it's not the kind of money some of the others have spent...but it ain't peanuts either.

This and the fact that we've not sold anyone are huge steps in the right direction for everyone involved.

Maybe I am naive to think Everton can win the league...but I think we can. The boss has me believing.

That is the difference now. We think we can. Not in a deluded bell whiff way that our neighbours might, but in a way that we have seen massive strides in 12 months. THAT IS CONTINUING.

Will we? No idea. Do I expect it? Nope. But CAN we? Yeah. Why the hell not?

That team Fergie won it with, Giggs etc as kids, that is the blueprint we seem to be building. Any blert can spunk £1BILLION on a football team and win some pots. Where, exactly, is the achievement in that?

Bang up for this season me.

Oh, the painting. Lets see.

We've had Landon Donovan for two spells, a bigger name in American 'soccer' than Roberto will ever be. How have we turned that into cash?

Tbf Martinez has a big profile in the US - with his ESPN portfolio, prob behind Howard currently in terms of profile over there, but I'd throw my hat at it if a mural ever went up of him.

This all around poor by Everton, no foresight and incredibly krass!

I wouldn't be surprised if Martinez didn't know anything about this!

Well that's definitely true. It's all about the execution, so I just hope the comprehensive advertising scheme is a good one. For me, they've chosen a good face of the club for advertising purposes and that's as far as I'm willing to back them. A good place to start.

Oh well, it could always be worse...

Two words explain this massive fail: Ken Wright

Well, the club don't seem to have a strong leader in their marketing department with a vision for what they want to sell the club as and the power to carry it out. I don't have high hopes for this mural as a branding exercise, but I think that is it's intended purpose.

Marketing pushes really need to be very well coordinated and bought into. There are loads of ways to market Everton. The club doesn't seem to be sure how they want to go about it. But I do wonder if some of that has to do with the fans. It seems 90% of the time the club tries something new it's met with moaning about how it's something the Kopites would do, or how it's 'not Everton' or some such.

This question of translating exposure into money: monetizing all this support in the U.S. in an interesting one. We do have evidence that the Everton fanbase is growing. A glance at the interest in GOT from US will tell you that. And all the various Everton Supporters Clubs all over the states with all the group members (and their kids) kitted out in the gear. Surely, there is money in all that for the club. As you say, the question is HOW you translate that into cash. But Roberto commentating in the US, Tim Howard's performance in the WC, even Landon's two loan spells: they have resulted in a growth in the US Everton fanbase. I've absolutely no doubt of that.

Every time Sky or anyone else is outside the ground doing interviews. They will see it on TV.
And? So Sky Sports are going to show the side of our ground with Martinez grid on it, a bloke that they interview and hold pressers with every week. How does that do anything for the supposed 'brand'?

Everton FC is the brand btw, you do realise this don't you?

Daft as a brush they are at that club.

They really are, the PR dept at least, it's already been a mess this week, with multiple pressers:

Barkleys held mysteriously - when everyone was rabid for a signing!

Then they gazump Besic presser with Lukakus on the same day - really felt for Mo!

Then this monstrosity of a mural which stinks of short termism, begging for a kick in the nads!

Historically:

though I'm trying to decide if it's worse then the club alerting us to major news - only to find out we'd sold Rodwell!

The abomination of the crest last season!

That before we even get into how they treated Alan Ball - purely for exclusive rights to report on the youth teams!

I'm not an out and out critic of everything at the club and some good stuff has gone down and is projected, but the clubs PR dept wants sacking root to branch!!

The only way this becomes "negative press" is by us moaning about it. It then becomes this season's "badge." I just don't think it's worth that kind of energy. I hear the arguments on both sides. It's a banner not a mural. It's easy to get rid of. It might benefit the brand. I think there is a "young turks" branding campaign going on. It's all about youth and FOR THIS YEAR MORE ABOUT THE FUTURE THAN THE PAST. Personally, I think it's better than just having the crest. If only for a year. Nothing to see here.
