That's the best way to look at it. The annoying thing is surely him and his agent have known for a long time what the buy out clause was. It's not like we will have put that in there at the end. Yet still it's been 99.99% done for months.
I still reckon he'll sign. We will probably have to lower the buy out clause. His deal doesn't expire until 2019 so it'll be interesting to see if the club gambles on getting champions league footy next season and tell him he's going nowhere this summer. That's if he does start angling for a move, which this news proves a move Is on his mind. It well depends on us though, go for it in summer bring in some quality players and go for the champions league and he will stay.

Lukaku has an overinflated ego and motivated only by his own self-interest. Fair enough you may say but there's being honorable about it and then there's being an egocentric, selfish individual. On the surface he likes to give this image of being a humble, genuine individual though realistically his decision making is self-seeking and self-obsessed. He is a young kid who has rose tinted glasses on the footballing world massively influenced by a scumbag agent hellbent on making dollar. Lukaku doesn't give the slightest bit of jizz about us and he never has.
Lukaku is well overdue leaving us and this was from the very moment he stated he'd like to move to a team in the champions league. It can be allowed for players to think and feel this way, it would only be natural progression based on our clubs own position and journey. What I am saying is that his manner and etiquette is naive, immature and ugly. He doesn't have any class and his personality towards a team environment in the position we are in is unhealthy. Typically I am sure footballers can be excused to have these attributes but Lukaku is a special case.
If we treat this situation with logic and approach it objectively, when he does leave it will mean a dreadful personality gone and, hopefully, a massive fee. These funds can then be used to add young talent and experience which we know Steve Walsh and Koeman are both targeting. Finally, Steve Walsh and Koeman have both stated the personality of a player is the main focus to improve team spirit and synergy. Lukaku does not provide anything healthy to the chemistry of the team. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.
