Ronald Koeman discussion

The pre-season games were already in place when he arrived. By all accounts he has completely ran them into the ground in training and If he is still not happy with their fitness levels then good, keep whipping them into shape. We will get there, and in the mean time a 70% fit Koeman side is fitter than any Martinez side.

Why not see them in action before you jump the gun?

Our players could very well have been gassed in these last few matches after very difficult training sessions. If that's the case, then I'd say the ends justifies the means. In the greater scheme of things, I would rather lose the first 3 matches and have our guys at 100% than win all 3 and have them still at 70%.

5 games and you are willing to give him time

What happens if we are not performing to the high standards you set after 10 games

I picked out 5 games because if we lose our first 5 matches, this place will go into full-on riot mode and you know it. I won't lie, if we lose our first 10 matches, I'll be very worried and I'm sure it will be justified.

That could definitely be true. And I will say this, Koeman's claim of 70% fit may mean 90% or even 100% for other managers. His standards could very well be much higher than anyone on Everton are used to.

One of the reasons we over achieved with Moyes was that the fitness levels were up there with the best. I'd love to see how his and Martinez compared. RK obviously had similar standards to Moyes.

Koeman compared the situation to a year ago at Southampton when he said he had them 100% fit for the new season. 70% by his standards could be 95% by another manager's standards and probably 250% by Martinez's.

He's looked at the players and seen what we needed, he's brought the 2nd best DM in the country and a very very good and experienced CD to sort out the defence, he's sold a slightly over rated youngster for huge money that cost us at least 10 points last season. He's getting Bolasie because he has pace, skill, knows the league and in a better team then palaces will thrive.
He brought a solid experienced(can you see the theme yet) goalie that he had last season, even if it's only as back up, as Howard has gone and Joel has little experience

I'm cautiously optimistic when it comes to Gueye but I'm not sure about that "2nd best DM" thing. I think it was a great move for the money though. Williams will definitely improve our defense. Getting £47.5 for Stones was fantastic. For me, he's never quite had the tenacious mentality that guys like Williams have. Bolasie seems better than what we have, I just hope we don't have to pay anywhere near £30 million. That seems ridiculous. Steck looks solid as a backup but I had hoped we would have our #1 by now.

Koeman has definitely done some good things. I would give him a grade of incomplete right now. We'll know more in a month's time.

I think he will still have his eye on another keeper but wait and see whether they are become available in the next couple of weeks. They are the hardest position to fill as obviously there is less of them available.

Saying your team are 70% fit before the opening game of the season is just offering an excuse to them...and we know these jellyfish dont need much of an excuse to clock off.

For all the plaudits Ronald is getting for "being straightforward", I am not sure broadcasting that your team is "only 70%" fit on the eve of a big game is a wise thing to do.

It gives the opposition an immediate boost in the lead up to the game.

Unless of course he is being a wee bit economical with the truth

It's beyond daft.

It makes you wonder why our squad is only 70% fit. It's obvious the team will be fitter under koemsn, than it was under Martinez, but to be 30% off the fitness levels he demands is worrying. I'm sure all players were given individual training regimes in the off season to maintain fitness levels, so it begs the question why are they so unfit?

The changing of the style to a more physically pressing game, we could see plenty of muscle injuries early on in the season (similar with klopp at Liverpool).

I think this is what koeman is referring to when talking about 70% fitness this will be what we are up and some way off, to be able to play a more pressing game to some considerable level.
