Ronald Koeman discussion

Yes, that's a reasonable enough interpretation of a post match interview after an emotional win. But he'd earlier released a statement that week where he committed to providing cash for players and retaining existing players. That's already compromised and may well be breached even further by the end of the window. We certainly weren't seeing any incoming until a big money sale was made.

He will be useful, I'm sure of that. But I think this window will burst a bit of a bubble that's been allowed to build up around him and that could be a problem.

That's a fair point. The reality is that there'll always be someone who wants to leave who we want to keep. All we can do in those circumstances is make sure we can offer them a decent wage ( though plainly we still can't compete on that front with the Cities and the United of the world ) and offer some sort of short term vision to try and match their professional ambitions ( which, lets be honest, we can't with the likes of Stones at the moment, he'll be playing CL footie this season ).

The first real judgement will be at the end of the transfer window. Very few people were really expecting a 100 million net spend, but it needs to be between 25 and 50 million to calm any fears. If it's over 50 million, the majority would be very pleased. At the moment, we're at something like minus 29 million. If Bolasie comes in early next week we'll still be negative, so hopefully we've got two, three or possibly four other targets in the 10 to 25 million range who we can get in before the end of the window, and that assumes no significant outgoings.

There's no point in spending cash for the sake of it though, but the squad needs strengthening so there's a fair bit of work to do

Everton boss Ronald Koeman issues challenge to Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas
Blues duo told to up work-rate if they want to remain key to future plans

Ronald Koeman has challenged creative duo Gerard Deulofeu and Kevin Mirallas to up their work-rate if they are to remain a central part of his Everton plans.

Koeman’s Goodison reign began with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Saturday – a game which reflected both the progress being made under the new manager, and the improvements still required.

Everton were strong in the first half, energetic and purposeful, and led through Ross Barkley’s early goal.

But, as their manager had predicted pre-match, their levels dipped sharply after the break, and after Erik Lamela’s equaliser they were grateful to goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg for two late saves to preserve a point.

Afterwards, Koeman declared himself satisfied with the performance. He did, however, have a warning for attacking duo Deulofeu and Mirallas, both of whom were replaced during the second half of the game.

“You see with Gerard, it is still not for 90 minutes,” he said. “With Gerard, with Kevin... I like the players, but they need to run more. They need to do more, they need to press more.

“It’s all about the work rate of the player. Sometimes it’s difficult because for that creative player, sometimes you’re a little bit more sloppy in that aspect of football.

“But we will work on it, and you saw Ross in the second half working hard for the team. It is not a question of how good his technique is or how good his first touch is, it’s about him needing to take more responsibility for the team and to do a job defending also. That makes the team stronger.

“We will learn that, no problem.”

Koeman pinpointed a missed chance by Deulofeu on the stroke of half-time, which would have made it 2-0, as a key moment in the game.

“He needs to score,” he said. “With those kind of chances, you have to.”

The Dutchman confirmed on Friday that he was keen to bring in at least one new striker before the transfer window closes at the end of the month. Nikola Kalinic, of Fiorentina, is the latest name linked.

With Romelu Lukaku sidelined with a heel injury – Koeman expects the Belgian to return for next weekend’s trip to West Brom – Deulofeu was given the nod to start up front, with Arouna Kone the only other striking option in the squad.

“Gerard showed through the whole of pre-season that he can play in that No.9 position,” Koeman said.

“Of course it’s for him a good challenge against teams like Tottenham, because they like to play with a high line defensively. So there’s a lot of space.

“And you saw with the really big opportunity before half time what can happen. We pressed really well on Rose the full back, and there was no other option but to play the ball back to the goalkeeper, and Gerard was between that.

“But he needs to score.”

Refreshing to the point honestly. Fans will love it. The pampered egos of some Premier League footballers will not.

Interesting times, agree with him like.

It's needed at the moment. The players have some culpability for how they downed tools in the previous manager and that can't be excused.

Reckon we will see a few leave in January, there's a worrying lack of character in the team.

Totally agree. We have seen that huge player hype coming from management can work well short term but just isn't sustainable. We need a hard arse manager and some hard arse players.

It's a policy that will be more in line with Evertonian culture. Good to see Koeman speaking of the next above all to work hard and apply oneself.

Everton culture can be many things: we thought Martinez was returning us to our roots with that whole school of science guff (which most of us fell for).

But aye, in practical terms I'm also onboard with Koeman's way as that's exactly what we need.

No matter what's in fashion at Everton, the need for hard work and graft in a game remains there.

Many ills can be forgiven as long as there is at least that.
