Ronald Koeman discussion

This press conference today, he says he knew he had to play all those youngsters - no he didn't. He had experience available on the bench and chose not to turn to it. Then he says he doesn't want talk about individuals because it's a team game - that must be news to Barkley. He corrects the journo who said he had problems with other managers to say it was just one - when we know he criticised Klopp on Saturday and has had spats this season with Wenger and he has a long running feud with LVG.

I thought this feller was straight talking?
I think he meant he was only critical of O'neill at present as he was 'defending' the Everton medical team (thought he did it well to be honest). The 'attack' on the Liverpool bench on Saturday appeared like 'sour grapes' at the time. But we won't know what was said by klopp or his bench, who were acting like a bunch of performing seals on the bench, contesting every decision. Maybe they got 'under Koeman's skin' a little and hence his criticism. However this isn't the first or last time klopp and his bench's antics have wound up other managers.

He's not the most consistent of speakers. There today he got a little tougher questioning from journalists and he was flapping again. You can see he;s very uncomfortable with criticism.

If he continues rattling cages he'll find himself in some very sticky situations in the media. He'll find out that other managers have much more of a hinterland to turn to in order to call Koeman to account. He's on a hiding to nothing if he keeps this nonsense up.

It's funny though, because when he was at S'ton he was always pretty much Mr Nice Guy and most footy fans around the country thought well of him...me included, which is why gave my support for him to be our next manager. But since he's been here he's looked and sounded cantankerous and an all round surly and unhappy bunny picking fights with everyone.

Pot kettle anyone? Not RK's finest hour at all, I didn't understand his team selection and I thought he had a touch of the Roberto's at the pressa but I think he may have been defending the youngsters so I will give him the benefit. He may have decided (following key injuries) that it's time to blood the youngsters and get a good idea of what shopping is required in the summer, just a theory.

Do you not think that the tactics can have an impact on the players not doing the basics though?

Against Spurs, for example, I would say the 1st goal was directly related to the fact that we had overloaded the midfield and the players in there weren't quite sure what their roles were. This led to Gueye 'passing on' a man who we would usually have expected him to engage with, and Barry not engaging either because he was sat too deep. Same with the 2nd. The lack of forward options meant we took an unnecessary risk trying to get the ball out quickly, and ended up losing it in a dangerous position.

I think the same sort of thing happened on Saturday. Pennington isn't used to playing in a 3 and wasn't sure whether to stick or twist at times. Holgate isn't a wing back and this led to him 'flapping' for the killer 3rd goal when in an unfamiliar situation.

When you know other players are nervous and you're not sure you can trust them, it affects everybody's game. The pass you normally play without thinking suddenly gets second guessed because you're not sure you want to put the player under pressure. The forward ball you want to play can't go because you notice the man you need hasn't made the run you expected. You start making poor decisions because you decide you need to take more responsibility, or you need to go looking for the ball.

In short, individual performances and tactical decisions go hand in hand, they're not separate.

Yeah, I agree with this. The tactics had an impact on the mistakes for those goals. The first two specifically came as a result of neither Williams nor Pennington making the decision to step out of the back 3 to pressure the man on the ball quick enough. Both of those goals were Mane and Coutinho against the back three with one of them on the ball and the other one running past the back line to create space. For Mane's goal, Jagielka took Coutinho's run and Gueye was beaten further up the pitch which left only Pennington and Williams to defend against Mane and they both backed off and gave him the space thinking someone else was going to come in a pressure the player on the ball.

When there is only two of them versus the three at the back then one of them has to take the runner and one of them has to press the man on the ball. Neither Williams nor Pennington were clear on whose responsibility it was to pressure the player on the ball.

we all know what that scummy club demands it's employees of. This is the same club that showed massive support for a racist and one that has beaten us umpteen times over the years through dodgy decisions and cheating, so we all know koeman was spot on with his words.

regarding the coaching staff of Liverpool, it wasn't just Koeman kicking off, Kluitenberg our fitness coach was having a right pop and telling Kopp to tell his staff to sit down and pipe down.

Think he lost it on Saturday. Not sure it's been found yet.

Does anyone know how many games we have won / lost when we go 5 at the back from the start?
Chelsea, liverpool, city, I know there was definitely a few wins.

He didn't need to win me over mate, I always said he was decent. My gripe with his signing has always been about the use of a large sum of cash spent on a position we were well catered for.

I think Saturday proved we are not all that well catered for in that position, Dave.

Gana hasn't been as good since the African Cup, Davies too young, Barry too slow.

McCarthy and Besic are made of chocolate.

I am starting to think Schneiderlin was a very necessary signing :(

He's improved us in th fact we now beat the dross below us but nothing more, Out of both cups to two awful sides and still miles off competing with the big boys

Yes mate, 3 matches, 9 points of an actual CL spot and the "big boys", completely "miles off".
