Ronald Koeman discussion

Was it dampening expectations or did he react to questions about Mourinho's pre-game notes? I understand him saying that now after a couple of bad results is like waving a red flag infront of a bull, but let's be honest here, top 4 was never a realistic target.

You want unproven Unsworth to replace Koeman because he ''knows what the fans want''. What does that even mean? Knowing what fans want and being able to achieve those things are entirely different things. You don't think Koeman knows what the fans want?
Top 4 absolutely should be a realistic target though. Not an expectation of course, but it is definitely realistic for us to challenge for that position. It's only 3 years since we last did it, and since then Leicester have won the league and Koeman's own Southampton side have missed out on the CL places by just 3 points. I don't know why people insist on putting the top 6 on such ridiculous pedestals, teams can (and do) compete with them

Koeman's comments RE. the Top 4 is straight out of Moyes' book of dampening expectations.

The man has spent more than any other manager in Everton's history.

Even if he somehow manages to survive this season, he definitely won't be here next.

Only problem is, who can we get to realistically replace him?

Unsworth would be a risk, but I really think he could get a success. He knows what the fans will want and has been successful, albeit at U-23 level.

Unsy would be a risk but he gets the club, the fans and more importantly would fair better on squad selection and tactics. I think the players would respond to him but in a world were player power is everything you have to wonder would he be able to manage dropping new players who signed on this summer.

Don't like the dampening down of expectations, it smacks of desperation to me and is the easiest form of defence.

He has until the end of October for me to turn it around and I have every confidence in him that he will.

Regarding RK's comments about being realistic and having a target of finishing the same place again next year, it seems to me that it is coming from a Manager who is now being reactive instead of proactive and trying to lower expectations due to being under pressure because of not just poor results but also because of extremely poor performances from himself and his team which has consequently taken them several steps backwards from a top 7 team to a team that is now in the relegation zone. The reality is, if a club comes 7th and then spends about 140 million on improvements including new quality players as well as getting rid of some dead wood, then it is perfectly reasonable for the expectation to be an improvement upon the previous season. That doesn't mean it has to be the top 4. Most people never expected the top 4 as a realistic target anyway. 5th or 6th are an improvement on previous and were realistic prior to the season starting. What we have seen so far has very little to do with gelling. It is more to do with lack of confidence, lack of teamwork, lack of effort, lack of quality and very poor game management. Sure we are missing a quality striker but there are far more problems than that. We have problems all over the field. We have no shape, no pace, no width and no starting 11. It has been deeply embarrassing so far regardless of the tough start. We used to be tough to beat and most of the top teams used to dread the fixture. We are instead reminiscent of how we played in the latter days of the Martinez regime.

I am all for honesty RK but not arse covering exercises due to very poor performances all round. Needs to get his act together and quickly.

I'm worried about confidence now, said before a damaging result yesterday could really be disastrous for confidence and give the 'lesser' teams belief that they can come at us and get something.

Under pressure because of our joke of a board who sold our best player knock down cheap part ex deal as they creamed themselves over 75 million quid and did not bring in the managers requested replacement.

It is early days and this team is just beggining to gel ridiculous to blame Koeman, whilst Walsh Moshiri Kenwright operate the sell to buy policy
Davies gave a great audition to his future employer yesterday and Pickford is nailed on to replace de gea.
Koeman will see out the next 18 months and then leave to a club that will not sell players he needs to progress

But we've lost our only world class player and also a very good attacking midfielder.

Name one of our players that the top clubs in England would want in their starting XI? How is it therefore realistic we would finish above any of these teams?

Brave..statement.
I can,t see it myself despite all the players he purchased this summer, none of them are interested in fighting for the manager on the pitch and dragging the players with them to better results.
We will just go through a charade now for a few weeks until the shoe drops that this was over in Sept.

More from Cascarino, in fairness Koeman must shoulder the blame for Sigurdsen

Instead they got £75m for their best player and spent more than half of it on Gylfi Sigurdsson — that seemed like madness to me at the time and looks even worse now.

“Ronald Koeman’s side have shown a lack of fight and backbone on the pitch in recent matches.

“But perhaps that weakness started long before the season began with the way they rolled over and allowed one of Europe’s best young strikers to join a rival.”

I think it's far more likely we will improve over the coming weeks than Koeman get the sack. Easier fixtures, more time for the players to bed in etc. I also doubt the players have stopped playing for him.

You say that like it excuses the situation, when in reality it is damning evidence of incompetence.

If Sigurdsson isn't good enough to get in the teams above us (and I agree he is not) then why oh why would you spend £45m on him? It's an absurd idea. Part of Koeman's job was to ensure we did get in sufficient quality to allow us to compete, so if we haven't he needs to shoulder a fair portion of the blame. He is being paid £6m a year, and the owner has said the aim is top 6. If he can't get us there, why are we throwing money away employing him?

Well we all see things differently.

Yesterday showed me that we can play football, we have some good technical players and the scoreline in the end was just ridiculous.

He needs to make a few changes and he needs to make them now, such as -

1. Do away with the back 3, we do not have the personnel to use that system.
2. Stop playing Rooney as the striker, he is far more effective just behind.
3. Stop playing so negatively, though some will use the opponents as the reason why he has been doing that, by showing a bit of ambition, Burnley have had some good results already against sides who finished in the top 4 last season.
4. It's Gana or Schneids for me, not both and Gana wins hands down.
5. Get some pace up top and give Sandro, DCL and Lookman some freedom to go and play.
