Everton boss Koeman reveals which player he gives the most attention to in training

Koeman insists this player knows exactly what he requires because he coaches him so closely

It was hardly an omission of Harold Bell proportions.

For those unaware of the long running Tranmere stalwart, he famously made 401 consecutive League appearances for Rovers between 1946 and 1955 - then was cruelly axed!

But Ross Barkley’s absence from Everton’s grittily earned point at Manchester City last weekend was still significant.

It ended a run of 55 successive Premier League appearances from the midfield tyro - a run bettered only by four Everton outfield players in the post-1992 era; and names like Joleon Lescott, Leighton Baines, Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka are renowned for their defensive durability.

But boss Ronald Koeman hopes that the interruption will elicit a reaction from a player he no longer believes should be treated like “a youngster.”

Koeman said: “Ross knows exactly what I expect because maybe he is one of the players who has the most attention from the manager.

Ronald Koeman talks to Ross Barkley during a game

“He needs the support of the manager, but the manager will always select the best 11 to start a particular game.

“That means you can be left out because you are not happy with the performances of an individual player, or you are making a tactical decision, but he knows he needs to improve.

“Yes he’s young but after four years of playing in the Premier League don’t mention that too much. He is experienced, and yes, he needs to perform. That’s what everybody needs to do.”

Barkley’s absence from the Etihad - a stadium where he scored a spectacular League Cup goal last season - was in deference to the possession City were expected to dominate.

That should be different at Turf Moor on Saturday, and Koeman hinted that Barkley could expect a recall.

“In my opinion it was the best line up to have the best chance to get a result,” he said.

“His reaction was positive. He was okay but disappointed. You need to be disappointed if you don’t start.

Ratcliffe: Everton boss Koeman is right to live outside Liverpool and this is why

“I changed him and I did not start with him, but it can be different this weekend.

“That is possible. You like to have the best team for the weekend. We will have more ball possession this weekend than we did last week. It is a difficult game, Burnley are strong at home. We will have more ball possession and need more attacking threat so that is a reason to start with one or two more attacking players.”

Barkley’s position has been a source of much speculation during his development from promising youngster to full England international.

Former Blues boss Roberto Martinez often speculated about Barkley’s ability to play in number six and number eight roles - in addition to the number 10 role he has occupied almost exclusively under Koeman.

The Blues boss has seen nothing to suggest his initial assessment was wrong.

In the spotlight: Ross Barkley

“It is not about his position, because he will always be the most offensive midfield player in my team,” he stressed.

“Okay, you can play differently with two holding or one holding midfielders and two more offensively. One of his biggest qualities is his creativity in front, but he needs to have other players around.

Koeman says Barkley dropping could be "wake-up call"

“Romelu needs other players to show more productivity and Ross is one who needs to do that if you play in that position.

“When he gets a little bit older then maybe he can drop back deeper but now it is in my mind to have him to be forward and to be creative.

“Still he’s one of those players who have a lot of creativity in his football – he needs to be around Rom to create and support and in that he needs to improve. That’s what I like to see from him. I want to see him do more pressing and be more aggressive offensively and defensively, but that applies to all the players in the front, not only Ross Barkley.”

Your right we stayed at home and shipped 3 goals in the last ten minutes ... we threw away two goal leads at Bournemouth and Chelsea... and ended up with the worst home record in our history... but I agree deffo the tactics we should playing... was great for the neutrals. Those tactics made me not actually want to watch Everton...

Sorry, Tel.

I disagree completely.

The two games you mention, away to both Chelsea and Bournemouth were, despite the disappointing endings, incredibly entertaining and more importantly, exciting football matches.

Some of the stuff we played on those days was exhilarating and had this particular arl bugger longing for the next game.

Contrast that to the utter no show at City.......it is games like that which would turn people off coming back to watch the Blues.....not those dramatic games from last autumn.

Compare that 3-3 with Bournemouth last season, warts and all, with the abomination we watched the other week down there.

And how different, how very different, was the recent Palace home game compared to the corresponding fixture last season?

Both wound up 1-1 draws but the other week we were hanging on to the ropes for most of the second half whereas last season we absolutely battered them, hitting the woodwork three times and forcing save after save from their goalkeeper.

It sure turned sour from March onwards but let's not forget how close we looked to cracking it toward the end of 2015 :)

If only Bobby had taken Chelsea's shilling and fetched Ash in during that summer window :(

Absolutely this. Maybe before March in my opinion it turned, but the football we were playing the first half of the season should have had us top 4 if not for the seemingly weekly defensive calamities that cost us the win.

Bloody hell, how wrong could the BBC be though?

Barkley has played every game bar City!

Did he really say that about Niasse?

I can t believe that is genuine.

Anfpd you are right about the BBC, Toff.....that is just lazy journalism.

I disagree mate. He was told to go. Had clubs interested, but chose to stay and sponge the club of the high wages the previous fool gave him. He's taking the mickey with us. I support Big Ron on this one 100%.

Everton striker Oumar Niasse still has no future at Everton, says Ronald Koeman

Blues boss admits striker's hat-trick for under-23s hasn't improved first-team chances

Ronald Koeman admits Oumar Niasse still has little chance of a future at Everton – despite his hat-trick for the under-23s this week.

Niasse caused a stir among Blues fans on Monday night when he scored a 21-minute first-half treble for David Unsworth’s second string in the 6-3 win at Reading.

Unsworth afterwards spoke glowingly of the Senegal striker’s professionalism while training with the U23s and the impact he has made on the Blues’ youngsters.

Koeman, though, has made no secret of the fact he does not see Niasse as part of his first-team plans since replacing Roberto Martinez – the man who bought the forward for £13.5million from Lokomotiv Moscow in February – as manager during the summer.

Oumar Niasse on Everton exile - I don't think I deserve this

And when asked if Niasse could return to the senior fold, Koeman today said: “I hope he scores a hat-trick every week in the under-23s.

“I never say never in football but the decision I took is not to change and it’s between us.”

Niasse has played only 152 minutes for Everton’s first team and was stripped of his squad number by Koeman in August and ordered to train with the youngsters.

The 26-year-old spoke last week of his treatment at Goodison by saying: “I don’t deserve this but what I can do is just keep my head and fight to change things.”

They're not made of glass and I doubt he would have said it if he didn't think they could handle it. Barkley is a senior player nigh on 3 seasons and needs to start acting like it.

I'm a little bemused by the hostility of your comment to be honest. He was reacting to direct questions. He explained why he dropped Barkley , praised his ability and pointed out he needed to start realising his potential now he's an experienced player. All fairly innocuous and obvious. On Niasse he merely restated his position when questioned that he did not see him as someone he would pick for the first team squad . Nothing controversial and all fairly obvious. Preferable for me to endless obfuscation anyway.

Don't bother talking sense, davek is just stretching for reasons to criticize Koeman

I know those two games were away... I was referring to the Stoke game and arsenal ones etc. I didn't write that clearly so I can see why you thought that. You talk about the Chelsea and Bournemouth games as being exciting.. if I supported saints or someone else I would agree... just like the Stoke game would have been, arsenal, the 6-3 chelsea game and many others. You say compare the Chelsea and Bournemouth 3-3 games with the city result? I tell you now.... the feeling I had after city doesn't cannot be measured against the the insanely angry feeling I had after those games... you say it was an abomination? I thought it was a hard earned draw against the probable champions.. we don't play like that every week do we? That won't turn me away from watching Everton...bobby took Everton away from me... I found it nearly impossible to watch.... even when we won I didn't feel anything really... we were so boring and when we actually turned into a shambles at the back I felt ,for the first time in my life... that I couldn't be bothered to watch Everton.... I obviously did... but I would take the city feeling against them every time.... and never want to have the Bournemouth feeling ever again... I mean we literally couldn't defend a lead in those games for longer than 2 minutes... our players couldn't last 90mins as they're fitness was shocking... we let in so many soft goals... Howard should have been dropped a year or two beofoe ... that is what turns me away from Everton if anything will..the semi final was another last minute defeat.... arsenal 2-0 with 10 mins left.... Wigan went down playing like that... just imagine that feeling... I honestly believe lukaku would have gone if bobby was still here and we would be in very big trouble. City are the best team in the league at the moment winning all but two games... they had won all their home games... he did actually try to be brave and play 4-3-3 but we were getting battered so he changed it (another thing RM wouldn't have done) I agree we didn't attack much , but that wasn't all down to tactics... they were so powerful and quick all over the pitch... they're a top side and we aren't at the moment and we got a point. I don't think it's going to be the same set up tommorrow
