Maybe Lukaku is already off and he's softening the blow.
More because it shows a lack of belief in that he can achieve anything with Everton.
And of course Koeman has only been in charge for 12 games, not over a full year!
He didn't say that though.
He literally said Rom wouldn't be fulfilling his potential if he stayed at Everton all of his career.
That's true.
Fits nicely with our sell to buy model.
Straight bat: "He's our player and we want to keep him."
End of story.
Not for big gob though.
Why not say "Rom can fulfill his potential here at Everton in time"
But that conveniently leaves a big massive gaping hole in the middle of all the things he could have said doesn't it? It's not like he had to either say 'no chance he's leaving' or 'I'd probably go if I was him', there's literally a million acceptable, diplomatic ways of answering the question but he's chosen to talk the club down. It's not offensive, it's not the end of the world, and very few people are saying it is. It is, however, totally unnecessary and dispiriting for an already disillusioned fanbase. As I said to @mkrudden earlier, there's two ways how people will take this.
The overly-dramatic (imo) view of how it's so bad and this changes everything and how dare he say it etc. (a bit like all the far-left liberals now believing that the world will literally implode due to Trump winning the US election - though that's a different story)
And then the view of okay, maybe it's not what you want to hear the manager say, but overall it's true. It's honest - and we all asked for more transparency and honesty. He hasn't said Lukaku should leave, or that he will leave. He has simply stated that Lukaku will not have fulfilled his potential if he stays here all of his career - which is absolutely 100% the case.
If he said Lukaku was going nowhere, then come next summer when there may well be a £60mil offer on the table, he'd be getting vilified.
He's said many times in the past that we want to keep hold of our best players. But there's nothing wrong with acknowledging how good Lukaku can be.
What next.. he's not exactly covering himself in glory is he.
good riddance. If Koeman doesnt want to achieve his ambitions at Everton, we may as well cut it short than prolong.Arsenal in the summer.
