He's probably better off in the championship with less pressure on him. Disappointing to those of us who thought he'd be ready for the first team by now but slow n steady wins the race i guess.

Just right now his decision making is not the best and neither are his defensive capabilities. He will get more gametime and generally this will improve him.

But then still has to make the step-up to the top-level again anyway.

I'm just not a massive fan of loan spells. They don't seem to have worked very well at Everton of recent. Duffy came back pretty well, but not sure how much that had to do with being on loan. But players like Baxter, Silva and Wallace, it didn't help them at all.

Coleman's the gold standard of successful loans in recent years like. Came back and started getting games pretty quickly afterwards.

I do think a lot of it has to do with the quality of team you are being loaned out to as well. A struggling side in league 1 is not really much good for a player with premier league ambitions. I think you need to be loaned out and getting game time for a decent championship level side.

It's not just about the games either. You have to think about the level of coaching they are going to get between games and is it going to aid development.

Actually, this is true. Good shout. But, I also agree with what TBN says, in that it depends on the club you go to. I think Coleman really benefited as an attacking FB under Holloway. He came back with a lot more verve, and maybe Barkley will too.

I still think Everton youth players should have a more structured path into the first team. Not every player benefits from the Sporting CP approach.

This has to be the biggest myth in football.

How so? I mean if it was an argument that loaning a player out makes them better I can see it being a myth because Beckham was clearly going to make it regardless of the loan but it's mostly been used on here as an argument that loaning a player to a lower league side doesn't always derail careers, and well it didn't. His career wasn't harmed by it at all.

this is from wikipedia, but -
He then went to Preston North End on loan for part of the 1994–95 season to get some first team experience. He impressed, scoring two goals in five appearances, notably scoring directly from a corner kick.[33] Beckham returned to Manchester and finally made his Premier League debut for Manchester United on 2 April 1995, in a goal-less draw against Leeds United. He played four times for United in the league that season, as they finished second behind Blackburn Rovers and missed a third successive Premier League title by a single point. He was not in the squad for United's FA Cup final clash with Everton on 20 May, which they lost 1–0 and were left without a major trophy for the first time since 1989.

He played five games. Less than a months worth of games. Yet it's always flagged up as an example of a loan move being the making of a successful player.

Again, five games. In that same season he had ten games at United!

The impact of the loan move to Preston is vastly overblown.

Yeah but I mean there's also John Terry, Peter Crouch, Jason Roberts, Scott Sinclair, Jonny Evans, Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson, Kyle Walker etc etc.

There's plenty of premier league quality footballers who have been loaned to substandard leagues and come back ready to start at the highest level. It's also just a distraction from the actual argument which is about Moyes and about Barkley. And that's how likely Ross is to get games both with and without loan experience. And pointing at man u players doesn't give us the answers.

As mentioned earlier, Osman & Coleman are genuine examples of loans benefiting players - I'm just noting that Beckham is a crap, simply incorrect example and overused to the extreme.

I'm still in two minds regarding Barkley. I think if he goes out to Sheff Wed and breaks a leg due to the thugs in that league, then we'll be regretting a lost talent as that'd be the end of him.

Overall, I still think he should be given gradually more minutes in the Everton first team and training with a higher calibre of player in the Premier League, but Moyes is clearly averse to doing that so the option doesn't seem to be there.
