Ross Barkley

Iirc Barkley has played 4 games out of the CAM position for Martinez, Arsenal at home last season where he played as LM as Osman went off injured, Crystal Palace at home he was CM because McCarthy was feeling his thigh muscles, and the last two games as LW as we have limited wingers due to injury. That is out of ~ 30 games he's started for him.

If Martinez makes a habit out of playing him on the wings for no discernable reason, like Wenger does with Ozil for example, I 'll be right up there complaining with you. But in each of the previous cases there has been a clear reason for the switch - injuries.
He's playing him there this season tho to accomodate Naismith. They both play in the same position, unfortunately not ONE of the guys who play in the middle are effective on the wing, yet Barkley is placed there.

If truth be told and we get 60mill take it and move on but for ffs stop wishing for the day he comes back to end his playing days at Everton. I hear enough of this s--- when is Whyne coming home since the day he left.

He doesn't play as an orthodox winger when he is put on the left either in my opinion. Especially with the width that Baines provides he is much more likely to cut inside then beat a man and cross it in to the box.

He's still much more effective playing centrally but I see no reason why he can't add two or three positions to his CV provided it isn't to the detriment to both the team and his own development.

I agree, so should Suarez I think that lad should really push for the Baloon d'or this year and add CDM onto his CV, that Bale lad aswell looks to have hit the gym think CB would be a good position for him.

Fans are shitting themselves that he could be off to city for big money but at the same time are not arsed he's played out of position making him ineffective.

We have scored 1 goal against swansea and sunderland and looked poor in both games with a side that is lacking that player to unlock a defence, that player is Ross who can't do nothing pushed out wide and even if he cuts in he leaves baines exposed on the left/lacking an attacking partner, and him and Naismith both central floods the midfield and it becomes too penned in.

Stevie G Laaaaaaaaa played right back, defensive mid, attacking mid, right wing and left wing during his career with the RS (past tense - his career is now over) and despite being a sub human gooch scraping did so very well.

Ross has the potential to be a better player and of course he will have a 'best' position but that doesn't mean he can't be effective in others as well.

But he isn't though that's been proven every time he's been played there. He's a CAM and should be played there. Stick atsu in the side atleast hes a natural LM

Chelsea/Man City/United (they will get it back together eventually) are billionaires. Even Arsenal and the RS simply have too much money for one good sale price to bridge that gap. A sale like Barkley maybe gets us up to Spurs (not Bale money just their normal money) level of spend for a year or two. Spurs FFS! For selling a once in a generation talent!

You're essentially looking at 11 games into a season for Southampton v. every other "selling" club in the Prem over the last 15 odd-years and actually considering the 11 game sample over the 1000+ game sample of all the selling clubs??!?!?!

The "best" example of sell-to-buy you would have as a non-Everton fan (aside from the 11 games of Southampton) is Everton selling Rooney. We sold him and "as a result" were the the only "poor" club to crack the top four in recent Prem history. It's the "best" example ... and most of us think we got ripped off with that deal ... not to mention despite some good seasons we haven't been back since.

Spurs also cracked the top four but they have more money and landed an exceptional world class talent (which is a better case for keeping Barkers than selling him). Aside from that? Nobody. No club has managed to sell their way into the CL (via the Prem) in a long time. So why do people still suggest it as a good strategy? Because we're so close? But we're close because we have NOT sold many of our best players. Baines stayed. Jags stayed. We sold Rodwell and Fellaini (even Arteta) but they weren't our best by a long-shot. Teams like Newcastle et al who pretend they are on our level are not actually on our level because they can't keep their Baines and Jags.

We'd get better if we could sell Barkley and get two Barkleys. But what are the odds of that? We won't get significantly better by selling Barkley and getting four players who are on par with our current players. And that would actually be a FANTASTIC bit of business ... and it wouldn't help that much! We'd have a much deeper squad (which would help a bit) but no upgrade in best 11 quality. Look at Arsenal last year -- we almost caught them because once they lost their best 11 they had a squad which (while really good) wasn't as good as our best 11. Best 11 quality is what will get us over the hump. You need a deep squad to play in the CL... but you need a great first 11 to make the CL. We can't afford both and we aren't already in the CL. Exceptional talent takes enough of those draws into wins to get you the CL.

Spurs/RS recently aren't just good examples of selling causing problems. They are great examples of how exceptional talent on just 1 of your 11 can make such a big difference.

Now obviously if you think Barkley won't work out then you'd want to sell. Sure. But how the hell could you know that?

Southampton will lose those players soon too if they continue playing well. They have established they are a selling club. The RS will come calling again (or Spurs, Man U etc.). They'll sell and the odds will catch up with them: they will make some poor or even just average buys and fall back down. It will also hurt the buying teams too because they will overpay. Everything about this benefits us ... as long as we can stay out of it.

It doesn't work in the Prem. We're not Porto. Porto couldn't be Porto if they were in the Prem.

As vomit inducing as it is ... the RS did well to keep Gerrard and it helped them a great deal to have a player (relatively) loyal to the club as a leader. Barkley could be (should be) better than Gerrard so imagine what we can do if we keep him. Not for sale. Not for 60m. It won't make us better than keeping him.

Firstly, I said if you look at southampton this season, they have re-invested wisely, but also went onto say that you look at Liverpool and Spurs and how they have used their sales and I think the opposite. Not to mention the fact that when a big name leaves for big money people are aware you have a larger transfer kitty hence bump the prices up for their players. You also say that Southampton will inevitabely sell these players if they continue to perform, but what if Southampton qualify for the champions league, will they then be a 'selling club'? Will these players want to move if they then have the money to reinvest in a squad and continue to do so wisely?

I agree we would not like to be a selling club ideally, but the fundamentals are that football is now dictated by money. Players want to be payed more, there will come a point where by if Ross really becomes as good as we expect, he would want to be earning the likes that your Yaya Toure and Rooney earn which will be 200 odd thousand a week. How do we then work around that, it wouldnt be viable with our wage structure in place to pay someone that much money. Provided we don't win things as well, or crack that tope four in the next couple of seasons what does Ross think, ah I'll just carry on plodding along in Europa league with the odd semi final here and there, when does he stop and think what is best for him financially as well as professionally. And how can he develop to be world class if he isn't testing himself on europe's biggest stage and only coming up against such players as ronaldo, messi, lahm etc... at a world cup or euro championships.

As much as I hate to admit it Fellaini and Arteta were definately our best players at the clubs in those seasons, and we are still a selling club, albeit not on the scale of your southamptons, and we are beggining to buck that trend as shown this window, but much of that was helped by new tv revenue increase and the left overs from fellaini anichebe etc... When the new tv revenue kicks in transfer prices will increase relatively and we will probably be back at square one having to sell one of our better players at the club each season or scraping parts of europe to find your mirallas'.

Obviously I hope we can build a team around Ross but unfortunately sentiments are not that big-er part of football anymore, and we don't have the finances to accomodate a superstar at the moment. Even if we were to get into the champions league for a few seasons consecutively there are only 4 places in the league for that, a city, arsenal, united, chelsea, liverpool or spurs would miss out. Kenwright wouldn't want to sell in that situation i wouldnt of thought and even if he did he'd find it hard to sell the club because the stock of the club would rise as a result and you'd need a city/chelsea buyer to come in as it wouldn't make much economical sense as there isn't much to work with in the ways of profit. But the problem would also rise with the other billionaire clubs who could invest millions as United have shown this season to re-compete and would continue to do so until we fell back out of the big 4.

The sorry state of the modern game.

Have to be honest. Roberto making statements like that is only going to put more pressure on him. The young England players are already expected to be as good as Ronaldo and Bale and that's we always under perform.

Let him play with freedom, and let him to do the talking.
I said in a earlier post ,let the lad have a free role and play anywhere. he looks to me like when he plays for club and country he has just had to read a 6 page dossier on where to go and what to do. Shackled by over coaching, RELEASE THE ROSS.
