Ross Barkley

I don't understand anyone that criticises this lad when he is in his second season in the premier league. What's worse is that he did so well last year so therefore expect it again, when really if we think about it, it's obvious that teams are going to get tighter this year, stop him accelerating and fundamentally stop him being a threat.

We aren't talking about a seasoned pro here, someone who has the necessary experience to know that a bad game is exactly that, and the next game wont necessarily be the same. Further we aren't talking about someone who has had the time, experience and knowledge of top flight football in order to adapt game by game in order to make sure he is always making his mark.

No, this is a kid. A kid who is getting berated for having a very good first season and not being able to live up to it this season for a whole host of understandable reasons.

We might not see the Ross Barkley of last season for another year or two yet because he needs to learn, as does our manager in a more general issue, to deal with scrutiny and raised expectations and further learn how to be effective when teams are playing a certain way to nullify him.

So I guess that i'm saying is, for all those on his case at the games and on here, wind it in.

I can understand a kid when they make mistakes. I can understand a kid when he tries something and it doesnt work. I can understand a kid when he seems a bit lost in confidence.

I cannot understand a kid who barely puts any effort into moving when the ball is 3 yards away. I cannot understand a kid who barely makes an effort for headers. I cannot understand a kid who has tackled less than our keeper.

This season, for me, my biggest gripes arent his attempts at doing something and failing, its his half-arsed movements around the pitch. He's 21. I could run for days when i was 21 ffs.

I think we only need to look at the way we play our games away from home and even some of the bigger games at home this season that the 3 man midfield of all defensive minded players and Barkley just randomly pushed on to the wing again would suggest that at least currently Martinez doesn't believe we are capable of playing the way we did with Barkley in the middle.

Its something ive mentioned for a while in regards to Martinez and he has very quickly in the space of a year backtracked on many of his beliefs, his way of playing and without a better way of putting it lacking a pair of bollocks downstairs to take the game to the opposition as we did so often in his first year.

He always banged on about giving youth there chance and trusting in the young players, this season he has backtracked a lot on that favouring Naismith to Barkley more often than not, Barry to Besic when Barry shouldn't have been close to the side, you could even argue with the way Distin was performing at the start of the season Browning would have been worthy of at least a game at CB and most recently the inexcusable dropping of Joel for a guy who has only saved a bit over 50% of shots hit at him this season which is horrendous.

All in all its impossible to argue that Barkley has been poor and its hard not to blame him for his performances but its difficult to look far beyond martinez without noticing where the issues all stem from.
Hes clearly not playing him well, but I just think that saying we need to build a team around a player who has amidst a few great runs, touches and shots, actually done very little is probably incorrect.
Personally I would build the team around Lukaku and use Barkley however he's placed best to feed Lukaku, DM, CM, AM, Second Striker, Front man, doesn't matter to me, if your building a team around a potential player, I think Lukaku is better, I also think that not building a team around Barkleys strengths doesn't mean he's lost faith at all.

Should be benched and used as a sub for the rest of the season

Utter joke of a season and imo hasn't worked hard enough for the team

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

His work rate bothered no one last season!

Maybe you should just add Howard, Coleman, Baines, Barry,.... Many others And MARTINEZ to that food of thought.

Everyone bar 2-3 players have played worse this season.

All players coincidently out of form or manager not using them correctly?? make your own decisions on that one.

Spot on. If you can't influence the game you've got no point being on the pitch. 1 or 2 games I'd say he's influenced.

So nobody is allowed to criticise Ross then or you get arsey? State of you you squealing little cheerleader.

His work rate bothered everyone who watched him play last season, actually, and all of those people were vocal about it here - he's not doing enough for the team when he's on the pitch.

Difference is, last year he'd at least have more than 5 seconds of brilliance on pitch, and would influence the game. This year - he's done nothing of this sort.

Very similar situation with sterling at the RS. Broke into the side at a young age, did really well initially and then had setbacks. They have stuck with him and look at him now.
In comparison Barkley had a more settled position last year. This year he has been shifted all over the park. I'm not using that as an excuse as Barkley has nowhere reached the heights of the season (like many of the team). One thing I do know is that Barkley is a potential match winner and if we are to get out of the mess we need potential matchwinners on the pitch, not three defensive midfielders.

There is no point in judging any individual player's potential, based on this season's performances. The team has stunk the place out as a whole, at least in the league. While there is a question mark over the manager's abilities, the players have somewhere to hide, IMO.

I appreciate talent and homegrown lads and don't base everything on workrate. And don't turn on my own so easily. I'd call you a kopite but they have more brains and decorum than yourself. Now that's saying something!!

Squealing cheerleader?? Them two words together just can't be taken as insulting words

Even Ian Snodin more or less said the same this week in his column. Your last sentence echoes my view of the situation with Ross.
