I think when he's intuitive he is fantastic.
See last season where he just went out and played his game.
For me he's over-thinking things too much. Lots more focus and attention from opposition players has played its part as well as his struggles to find form and confidence after that big injury he had has meant he feels the pressure to get it right all the time. It's a ticking timebomb for him as when he makes a mistake everyone gets on his back.
He's still a young player and as such prone to mistakes and drops in form and confidence. As he develops that bank of experience my hope is that he'll develop towards what I hope he can become.
Excellent post mate...and fingers crossed your diagnosis, and prognosis, are proved correct

Fed up of him running around like a rabbit in the headlights now, he's barely offered anything all season. Doesn't score, doesn't create many chances and doesn't even win possession.

Needs dropping to remind him how far from being the finished article he really is.

Looks better in centre midfield to me.

Definitely not the answer playing off the striker - lacks the creativity and craft.

we dropped him and osman last week, how'd that turn out ? we were even worse

He offers no creativity in these type of games. Desperately need someone who can unlock a defense on their own, and before we get one, we'll lose to the 'park the bus' away teams regularly.

He's absolutely crap isn't he

He had a bad game, has had a bad season. I'm happy that he still looks to get on the ball and make things tick, but it isn't happening for him.

He's one of those, like Lukaku, that you just hope and pray that the lightbulb comes on in their head and they go on to reach the potential they undoubtedly have. Stones has done it, but we need similar inspiration in the final third, and unfortunately we have absolutely zero of it at the moment.

People aren't gonna like this, but I have a sneaky suspicion that the issue with Barkley might be that he doesn't have the brains to be an elite player. I wonder if he's gotten this far on raw talent and just having the physical tools to outplay most of his competition as he was coming up. Teams seem to have him figured out now. He often looks lost out there. I don't know that he'll ever be able to pick up the subtle, insightful qualities that you see in most elite players.

Hope I'm way wrong like.

Agree the crowd always on his back all time doesn't help, he can't win most of time he tries through ball people banging on to play it simple then when he plays it simple people have a pop.

Just going to say it... is it worth loaning him out for a year?

He's made zero progress this year. Arguably even taken a step back. Maybe a fresh environment might help?

Feel free to shoot down this idea, like. Just spitballing.

When you're outshone by a 33y.o. osman like he was today, then there's somethin' definitely wrong.

But he's been cack all season. Today, when he chased a slow moving ball in our half, then (un-necessarily & at full stretch) knocked the ball too far ahead of himself - when under no pressure whatsoever - has proved the final straw for me.

He hasn't progressed in any way shape nor form. He looks around for a pass but rarely makes it. He doesn't carry the ball like oxdale-chamberlain or townsend do; not with mujch force or conviction anyway. He runs down blind alleys & oversteps the ball when the tackles come in. That should've been coached out of him long ago.

I don't see him developing anymore (at least not here) so it's time to sell him while there's still some hype around him, imo.
