Ross Barkley

Let's not beat around the bush here.

If you're boss at footy and you play with a load of average/poor lads then you stand out.

I haven't watched Ross for Sheffield Wednesday so I can't judge, and I don't for a second doubt his talent as we all seen that QPR game, but if he's not standing out in their team then something isn't right.

You're wrong mate. Sorry for my opinion but there are too many factors in play. What if the rest of the team see him as a some no name from the big leagues and won't pass him the ball... One example. What if he is a tad arrogant (or confident in his own abilities!) and the blokes who've been around a bit don't like it... The fact they've lost what was it, 6 from 7, means they're kind of shoite to begin with.

The bagging of a BOY who's missed a massive chunk of his junior football and is only just starting to get himself together is a bit of a concern... How about we back him in and see how he goes? He's only... a... boy.

Most of the Wednesday fans are saying he is decent but not very good at tracking back or defending.

Which is exactly what I thought about him when I've seen him play for Everton.

I base my argument on having seen Sheff Utd (we're talking 3 years ago) play 8 times, who were, at the time, better than Sheff Weds. And even they were poor positionally, lacked players with movement and intelligence, and of course that extra bit of class. When I say they're not on the same level, its because I imagine its very difficult to play with people not on the same wavelength as yourself, for example, they don't make the runs or passes you expect, and you would certainly struggle to fit in.

If he was at a 'Wigan' however, their lads can actually play football. He'd be with people who he could learn from (at the very least attitude wise), and he'd no doubt work harder as a result.

Strange logic that, mate. What you saw was 3 years ago, not even the team that Barkley's playing for, and the team you saw were Sheff Utd. Who are now in the division below Sheff Wed. And Wednesday have a different manager and lots of different players since 2009.

Maybe Everton don't want to lend him to a fellow Premiership side. Maybe Wigan don't want him.

Totally agree. Exactly this. It's such an easy cop out to say Barkley looks crap because he's playing in a crap team. If you're as good as people say you are, you'd stand out. Coleman stood out at Blackpool. Duffy stood out at Scunthorpe. Osman stood out at Carlisle and Derby.

Got to agree. I'm still with tubey that he should have gone to a better team than Sheff Wed, though.

I think if we were willing to let him go out on a more permanent basis he would have.

It shows that he may be in Moyes plans at some point this season though, which is encouraging.

The comparison was purely for an example, to demonstrate how I've seen first hand how poor championship teams can be in certain areas, such as positional play, intelligence etc. These things may mean he simply wont fit into their style of play.

Of course, I can see why people assume he should be running the show, just offering a idea as to why he isn't. It might not be because he's not all he's cracked up to be.

Could be similar reasons why world class players don't do it in the Premier League, there's often more to it than simply a players ability.

Maybe Ross has gone to Wednesday under orders for him and them to work on his defensive game, therefor his attacking game which is his strongpoint is being compromised.

Of course you;d hope he could do both but he's still young and learning, sometimes you have to take 1 step back to take 2 forward.

Agreed, when I watched the football league show a couple of weeks ago he was playing CM, which suggests Moyes has instructed them to play there. Out wide he gets the chance to only focus on attacking etc, which would be counter-productive to him going there.

Moyes might be delighted with his defensive work and progress with attitude, we just don't know.

The counter argument to that of course is that if he was any good, he'd make a difference to their team.

In the same way that James Wallace has made a massive difference to Tranmere's team. Leaving Everton Reserves, going to Tranmere, made captain and lynchpin of the side, and now one of their most important players as they chase promotion. He's one of the big reasons they are doing so well.

I am sure Barkley does have ability and potential, but let's not dismiss what is a Championship side playing in front of 25,000+ each week as 'nothing' and 'below Barkley's talents'.

This.

Seems to be a lot of excuses as to why he's not been a stand out in a poor team rather that just saying, he was okay.

If we didn't know Ross wasn't an Everton loanee and we looked at him in a Wednesday game... He wouldn't be a player you'd get excited about.

Where as there's a fair few young players in that division that stand out and touted to be 10mill+ transfer targets.

I don't think he's at the wrong level i just think he's at the wrong club, he would have been much better at a more established Championship club where he has a much better array of support around him. Instead he's basiclly just been thrown in the deep in and expected to preform in a pretty poor team.

... and the posts expressing pure horror in this very thread when I suggested a loan move to Wednesday may not be beneficial for the lad...

Might do some rooting through the thread later on for a laugh ;)
