Ross Barkley

@Mikey_Fitzgerald I scored a worldie last night, drop of the shoulder then smashed off the underside of the bar. I'll have a zinger meal please, gravy and tango ;)

As far as Ross is concerned, this is a make or break season IMO.

If he was playing under Mourinho he'd be class now bossing all sorts of games. As it is he's got to suffer fools like Martinez and Hodgson who seem to need a tactical blueprint to be carried out to perfection just to score one goal.

He wouldn't play under Mourinho. And if he did, he'd be surrounded by world class players that'd make him look better than he is. The English way

If Barkley were in the present Chelsea squad he'd be a bit part player, or on loan at Arnhem.

I still don't really know what to think of him. At times I'm convinced he's some sort of footballing savant.

The gaps in between those mad moments of skill or a wonder goal are getting bigger and bigger. He's almost drifting into Andros Townsend territory.

Wasn't Rodwell a bit like that?

I think you're right ...last year was supposed to be 'breakthrough season', and if that season doesn't fulfil its title, its always followed by 'make or break season', followed by 'time is running out', followed by 'the Sunderland bench'

A decent piece summarising how Hodgson really, really, really likes Barkley and he's really, really, really good but still won't start him.

He epitomises why England are 15th in the world rankings. The sooner he's gone, the sooner Ross can help England get closer to actually achieving something.

Roy Hodgson is not a bad manager, and to be honest his comments on Ross have been spot on.

All he has tried to do is play down the hype on him. Last summer he was pouring water on the hype saying he is a young player who makes mistakes but still saying he is a talent.

This season our own fans have turned on him but at least Roy has stood by him.

Roy is not a bad manager in the same way Steve McClaren is not a bad manager. They're not great, they're not good, but at least they're not bad. Quarter final in a European championship, great effort, good team spirit, well done lads we did our part.

Last summer he completely mismanaged Ross. He played down all the hype, slated him for trying to play progressive, attacking football and gave him about 45 minutes playing time. He has continued to do the same thing this season and will likely do the same thing next season. While players such as Henderson are given guaranteed starts for not being bad players (just like Hodgeson is not a bad manager), Ross is overlooked because Roy is treating him like he's 16. He isn't, he's 21 and he needs starts. He needs games. It's a little bit like coming out of university and finding a job listing that states "entry level, 2 years experience required". How on Earth is Ross expected to grow and learn to play with his international teammates if he isn't bloody playing with his international teammates?!

At what point does Ross get to start under Hodgson? When he turns 22? 23? 24 and 100 days? It's this "can't have kids trying new things" mentality that drives me up the effing wall and is why England are absolutely mediocre on the international stage.
