David Moyes has taken an unconventional step in his approach in singling out Ross Barkley as a ´really special talent´ and ´one to keep an eye out for´.
Speaking to Eurosport, Moyes confirmed Barkley would have featured in the first team this season, if it wasn´t for braking his leg in two places a shattering injury in the first half of England Under 19s defeat in Belgium in Octomer.

Moyes: "Ross Barkley will come through. He´s already playing up the levels for England and unfortunately, playing for England he broke his leg in three places at the start of the season. He´d already started training with the first team and I believe he would have played this season in the first team if he hadn´t broke his leg. He would be the one to keep an eye out for.

Everton manager David Moyes has backed England youth international Ross Barkley to make a name for himself in first team action next season.
Barkley who is recovering from breaking his leg earlier in the season hopes to start light training in the remaining weeks of the season as he continues his rehabilitation.
As the blues finish the season with a threadbare squad that has seen many young prospects blooded in recent weeks, Moyes has taken the unusual step of singling out Barkley while bemoaning the fact that injury robbed him of his chance of first team action this season.
"I think he would have played in the first team already this year if he hadn't had his injury. If we had Europa League football too, he would have been a certainty but with the injury he has missed most of the season."
"I wouldn't say I;d count on him as a first team player. You can't say that until they come through. He will be in the group of young players with the hope that one or two of them will pop their heads through and join in."
"It was a big injury, but he's doing really well now. He had a pin removed from his leg recently which has caused him a bit of discomfort."
"But we're hopeful he may start a little bit of work with a ball before the end of the season - that's our plan."
"So by the time he's had a rest in the summer, he may be ready to start pre-season with us."

A couple of years on, and after intensive training with Alan Stubbs - you can see why fans are asking questions.

No, it's based on seeing him run the show when given a proper run out, against QPR on his debut at 17 for example.

I was at that game and he was completely outstanding. Then he gave away a penalty a few games later and that's pretty much the last we've seen of him.

I'm judging him on what I've seen of him, and he's an astonishing talent. Simple as.

We were total ****e that day & so he didn't have to do much to stand out

It was also patently obvious that day that he wasn't suited to playing out wide & his natural position was central mid. However, that's position comes with a massive level of responsibility & Moyes obviously doesn't feel that the lad is ready to take that role on the PL YET!

Moyes bigged the lad up again pre match so he obviously rates him, he's just managing him & given he sees him every day he's better placed to make that call than you

I was against Barkley going on loan because I think he can learn more from getting gradual minutes in the first team set up. I worried about him getting clogged but that wasn't a malicious game tonight, so you'd bring him on in the 60th minute and he's not going to get done. On another night, if a tackle went in early and hard, I'd say leave him on the bench.

You can vault me about that if you want - I said it numerous times :)

Just something I thought I would mention.

But I agree with you in a way and others, im not quite sure the benefit of playing Gueye or Naismith ahead of him today, we all know they are terrible.

'Will one day play for England'.

A player can have the skills at a basic level which would allow you to play at the top of the game. That doesn't mean you're ready to go out and play Premier League football.

There are some 15 or 16 year olds who you could say the same thing about too. I bet people watching Messi when he was 12 probably said 'this lad is going to be a world beater'. Didn't mean he was ready to play for Barca in the CL final.

He said: “Ross Barkley is a special talent. He has been unlucky this season with his injury but he is an immense player with a great attitude to football.

“He is so mature for his age and I think he is going to be a massive asset to Everton in years to come.

“I have played with some great players in my career but I do not think I have ever seen a talent like Ross.â€￾

Must be **** in training lad

can anyone explain what was the point of bringing on Naismith and Hitzelsperger and leaving Neville on for the whole game against a 4th league side when you are 4-1 up while you have young and relatively untested quantities on the bench in Vellios , Barkly and Duffy ?
if i was 1 of those 3 lads i would seriously look for a new employer because my current one does not think i am good enough for a 10 min spell against a 4th div side when we are 4-1 up

TBH i'm not even sure of the value in bringing him on against a League 2 side. What would he have learnt that would aid his Premier League development ?

Barkley was only ever brought back as back up when we had injury worries, Moyes himself even said that he wants him to go out on loan.

surely you believe barkley would have got more value out of it than hitzlesperger? vellios for that matter as well, either could have come on and grabbed a morale boosting goal for themself. would it really be that morale boosting for hitz or even naismith to have scored one?

I'd answer this but Dan has done it for me.

Answer the question though - why is he ready for 10 minutes against the reigning European champions when we're losing, but he's not ready for 30 minutes against a League Two side we're thrashing and winning comfortably? Where is the logic?

He also won two good tackles against Chelsea, dropped into space intelligently and had a decent pop at goal. Nobody talks about that - they talk about the one time he had the ball on the right edge of the box and nobody dropped off to give him a ball, because the side was completely disjointed and lacked any form of shape as we were chasing a game with three minutes to go.

In short, you're kneejerking by judging him based on one very, very narrow example.

The reason no-one talks about that is that's what he's supposed to do, giving the ball away once in a cameo appearance would be overlooked but each time he's been on he's done it. It's a flaw that needs sorting.
