Ross Barkley

......the fact that they persevered with Coleman supports my view that the Manager and coaches thought he was up to it. I don't think you grasped the point I'm making - fans on here are calling for certain youngsters to 'get a run of games' and all I'm saying is that this will only happen if the Manager feels he's up to it.

They stuck with Coleman because he was our only fit RB at the time

Well exactly.

Its a bit daft to claim as fact that young players will get games if the manager thinks they're good enough. Thats kinda obvious.

Its what criteria the manager uses to determeine if they are good enough which appears to be the issue, and whether certain ex managers of ours were too hesitant to give actual proper chances and game times to young inexperienced players regardless of how much potential to be developed into good enough for the first team squad they had.

It is frustrating watching other clubs sign these foreigners but watching young players promoted to the first team is much more rewarding I think. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Martinez works with the u21s and such. I know we've been saying this every preseason for the past few years but I really believe this is Barkley's breakout season.

It will be, Bobby clearly likes his youth, he showed that at Wigan. Ross will play a lot his season and it wouldn't surprise if he earns an England call up at some point before the world cup. As blues we've got a hell of a lot to look forward to this season even if we sign no one else

I'm not convinced he did show that at wigan, though.

I know I keep harping on the way he didn't give mcmanaman a start in the league until after the fa cup game at goodison when he was already nearly 22 but he did do that and this was with a player who was probably the best at the club.

He played McMananam in the cup games before that though didn't he? Maybe he was using the cup games to blood him in cos ultimately the league was way more important to play kids when you're fighting relegation

He took punts on McCarthy and McArthur, both untried kids at the top level at the time. Given Wigan had no history of producing players he can hardly be blamed for not blooding kids

Mcmanaman was bought in because of injury problems last season, but wigan doesn't really have a youth system so there never was anyone really to bring through.

Mcarthur and McCarthy were pretty established in Scotland, martinez did nurture them at a higher level though

But surely the fact they won the cup and got relegated showed he misjudged that and he should have played mcmanaman more?

The fact is I don't want another situation where the first team is struggling and the most talented midfielder at the club is sitting on the bench because he's young and the manager doesn't trust him. And that's what happened here with barkley and that's what happened at wigan with mcmanaman.

Don't get me wrong, I really hope Martinez will play our kids but I'm not as convinced that it's certain he will as some people are.
