Ross Barkley

But some his best performances have come by running from deep after narrowly getting/keeping the ball.

He'll get better at it but it will probably always be a risk given how he seems to like to play. Just have to hope that is is the opposition defence that has a terrified look on their face as Barkley run at them rather than our own as he loses the ball.

If he can't be trusted in those positions then he won't play. This isn't the Premier League, you can't take chances like that at this level. I do believe he will iron these things out of his play though. You can drive on the counter without being reckless in the process.

That hamamm article on the bleacher report from may says at the bottom not to play rooney or sturridge wide....and look what happened!!
Pity we didn't try a 4-3-3 with Rooney & Sturridge flanking either Sterling/Barkley (bit like we played Arsenal at home with Mirallas/Lukaku either side of Naismith) but it is a lot easier to say after the game than before like Hamamm did.

Depends on what you attitude to risk is and how likely you think you are to succeed by playing it safe.

Moyes/Hodgson are inherently risk adverse so as you say were unlikely to risk playing him from the start at this type of competition. Mourinho, who is also cautious (but a much better manager) may have made the decision not to start him.

But given our lack of truly game-changing options don't think Barkley was that bad a bet, especially given his performances in the friendlies. At least, no more so that an out of form Rooney in an unfamiliar position.

However ,it is a lot easier to say that when you are not the one who has to face the tabloids in the morning

Over the course of a season playing for us, our team suffered in no way from Ross and his dribbling, taking risks etc...quite the opposite infact we benifited massively from it.

Roy missed a trick. Ross should of started both games as No.10. He's a very very unique special talent. I honestly believe he would of had simlar effect to that of neymar and robben have had for there respective countries.

As always with England Name comes before talent and effectiveness for the team. Rooney is a great player BUT as a No.10 for England he slows the play down too much.

The difference tonight with Ross playing and a better CM pairing of lamp/Wilshire will instantly show what could of been IMO.

Ross should have started, as long as he has cover like Barry and McCarthey have provided this should not be a problem, a risk worth taking. Been too much talk about where to play Rooney and how to fit him into the team. If you take away his short stint at Everton when he was looking like he would develop into one of the worlds best ever players and a few good early seasons at Man U he is the most overrated player in the prem. but that's these coaches for you. They will take away your individuality and try turn you into a team player, play it easy the way your facing. England have done it to loads like Barnes, Trevor Steven and any players with Flair. Now Ross will be next. The coaching RM gives will be different to what England give to Ross, let's see who wins.

Everyone stop talking rubbish about losing the ball.

How many times did Messi loose the ball around the middle or any other player that dribbles?

Taking measured risks is how games are won. As long as he doesn't try to take someone on when there's no one behind.

I hope this World Cup has taught Ross how lucky he is to have Martinez.

It's too many people listening to what dinosaurs like Moyes and Hodgson say.

Football is a passing game but dribblers win games.

They break through the lines and create two on ones which lead to chances. Teams that don't have that are just too predicatable.

Just been watching zidane compilations on YouTube and I think I read somewhere that he is Ross's idol. I do see some similarities with the way they play definately. If Ross turns into even half the player Zidane was then we could be looking at one of England's best ever players.

With Ross you expect the unexpected, not many players can do that. Hope he gets through this meaningless match unscathed but has enjoyed his experience overall. He has plenty of tournaments ahead of him still.

Must be staying now

I would be perfectly happy with him having an innocuous game today.
I want back at Everton, resting for the new season and with a new contract in his hand.

A brilliant performance will simply convince some of the wealthier clubs that it is time to force through a move...and there are only two years
left on the contract.
