Ross Barkley

He's been having 'quiet words' for months.

He needs - we need - a decision from the player.

Exactly, and he's hung the player out whilst there was football to still be played. So it's to the detriment of the Team, which isn't good management. Give Ross an ultimatum by all means, but by making it public, it's not making Ross life any easier, he already gets his fair share of abuse and that was before this stand off.

The board need to get Koeman out of the country...which he says himself is tomorrow or the next day...then get RB and his agent in and thrash out the details on the deal.

That's a very valid point to make.

To make the cut at all levels and age groups and become a PL player requires a huge physical and mental effort. Yes, he must have fortitude. I just think the constant background music of a manager and/or crowd on his case cant do any player any good. And that's what he's faced this season.

There's been a bullying element to this that I found pretty distasteful.

There is no doubt he has had a challenging season, on and off the pitch.

I hope he signs, but if he doesnt, I would not fall off my stool if it emerges that, er, "non football" issues raise their head.

So what could they possibly say? "We announce we have no deal in place for Ross Barkley at this time. More as we have it"?

"Ross Barkley has rejected Everton's contract offer and informed the club of his intention to leave".

100% it will be this! Tuesday morning after some press reports Monday afternoon/night

Or the manager just doesn't think he's worthy of stressing over if the player himself wants to leave?
Yeah it could be - I'm just trying to be neutral and look at the optics externally. Contract run down for a home grown player that won't sign and likely goes for a lower price than in an ideal situation. Kind appears the club either is a bit disorganized or can't keep someone you would think they could. This isn't bashing Koeman. I like him and think he is far more in the right on Ross's taken and value.. But sometimes there is a bit of a bigger picture perception.

We'll see.

Sounds like a deal has been thrashed out to me.

The future of Everton midfielder Ross Barkley will be decided on Monday, says manager Ronald Koeman.

The 23-year-old has been told he will be sold if he does not sign a new contract by the end of this weekend.

The Dutchman, who left Barkley out of the starting XI as 10-man Arsenal beat the Toffees 3-1 on Sunday, said he would speak to the board.

"Ross was one of the players who didn't show productivity today," said Koeman. "It's not about one player."

Barkley has a contract with his boyhood club until the summer of 2018 and has been offered an extension.

Everton finished the 2016-17 season in seventh, eight points behind Manchester United in sixth but 15 points above Southampton in eighth.

"We need to find players with more productivity," he said. "The board will back me. We want more quality in. That's what they will support."

Interesting video interview there! Koeman took umbrage to the suggestion he doesn't want Barkley to stay! 1m 25 onwards

There is a compromise that satisfies Ross and Koeman.

Ross knows full well that if he moves on to a top 6 club he is not a guaranteed starter and is sitting on the bench. If he wants to be a guaranteed starter he is looking at West Ham and Newcastle. But Ross want's more money than is currently being offered and he would get that sitting on the bench of a top 6 club.

Koeman in contrast wants his players. He doesn't feel that he can rely on Barkley and he is looking for more consistent players. I would imagine that he has reservations that keeping Barkley may hinder his chances of bringing in his own players this summer.

The compromise is to offer Ross more money (thus negating the reason for him to move to a top 6 club) but to make it clear he is going to face competition next season and that Koeman is has total control of on-field matters. That is no different to how things would be at a top 6 club.

Koeman in contrast is given reasurance that Ross's new contract will in no way impede his attempts to bring in his players this summer, perhaps given reassurance regarding his transfer budget.

In that way the club protect's Ross's value, whilst Koeman is not in anyway under an obligation to start him, week in week out.

The board need to get Koeman out of the country...which he says himself is tomorrow or the next day...then get RB and his agent in and thrash out the details on the deal.

Absolutely not. That completely undermines the manager. Barkley is a decent first team player. He certainly isn't going to provoke a board intervention. How small time would that be??? The board intervening over the managers head to resign a player averaging a meagre 5 goals a season from no.10

I think we need to go out a buy a player who can produce week in week out.

This is all smacks of Bill again stepping into affairs when he should be retiring from the club.

He's not got the mentality for that.

His previous captain Phil Neville saying he knew Barkley would have a horror show at the Anfield Derby after his England snub, his current captain Phil Jagielka having to reassure him at Wembley the boos weren't for him but the manager, him with tears in his eyes on the bench when his form was on its arse earlier in the season... even him disabling comments on his Instagram etc.

He just doesn't come across as resilient.

Fans bemoan Everton being bottle jobs - is Ross Barkley someone you'd be confident will put in a performance when it really matters?

If Moshiri is genuine, if Koeman is genuine - by genuine I'm talking champions league, then we need better than Ross Barkley.

This all day.
He needs some fire inside him - some aggression. He just doesn't naturally possess that extra element that separates good players to great players.

I said about a year ago I can't work out if he lacks confidence or is over confident (he thinks it's easy and not putting effort in). I now firmly believe it is the former.

It's a shame as I thought he'd be the one to drive us forward. but we need better than Ross unfortunately to take us where we want to get to.
Such a shame.

Oh, poor Ross. :(

I would think his constant refusal to sign the contract he has had offered to him that is detrimental to the team. Nobody is bigger than the club, and if you're leaving the club hanging on a decision like this then they're fully entitled to call him out on it. Particularly as he's a homegrown blue.
