Ross Barkley

Spurs fan here. I am really keen for us to sign Barkley. Poch seems to have the golden touch with young English players and I honestly think the reason Poch wants him is he believes he can make this kid a top quality PL player. I also wonder that instead of a number 10 which Barkley sees himself in, Poch views him as a long term successor to Dembele in the middle of the park. Both skillfull and strong on the ball. Dembele is 30 this season and will have to be managed so that he doesn't pick up injuries.

I wonder what Everton fans think, if he could play this type of role? He isn't ousting Alli from No 10 let's be honest.

Regarding the likelihood of a transfer, I think this has deadline day written all over it.

If he plays in the middle you'll need someone next to him that has legs like the Road Runner.

You'd need someone to cover for all the misplaced passes that'll go to the opposition and puts them straight back onto attack.

He can hold the ball all day long and provided he's actually in shape, which he was this year but not in prior years, his offensive output would be fine. But he can't tackle. He can't mark anyone. He isn't going to win any balls back for you.

Therein lies the problem with Ross. Koeman recognizes this, which is why he continues to try and push him higher up the pitch and have him be more aggressive, take guys on, etc. Prior to Gana, Davies, and Morgan, he had to come way back to just get the ball. He wants a ton of the ball, he can hold on to it very well, but most of the time it results in little. That's why when geniuses post stats saying how he's created 84 chances in the past year, it's kind of misleading because he constantly has the ball. He can create chances, but he isn't amazingly efficient at is.

Sadly, when he DOES get closer to the goal, he can still hold it well, and can be dangerous, but he's not decisive, he's not aggressive, and it drives Koeman crazy. He's got decent touch, decent pace, decent shot, but his mentality stinks. Again, if he could tackle, mark, and win balls, he'd be an amazing box to box guy. But he just can't.

Ross has already said he looks up to Dembele, last season was his best in terms of holding the ball, and he was very strong on the ball, and very hard to get it off him. He probably held onto it to long at times, mainly due to none of our players making the runs for him.

Wanyama is about as leggy a defensive midfield player as you could get alongside you. I think if he does come to Spurs, Barkley will rotate with Winks to back up Dembele but will also offer Poch the chance to play Barkley higher up the pitch to rotate with Son, Alli, Eriksen and Lamela etc

I think this transfer makes sense, I can see why apparently he is Poch's number 1 target. Poch wants players who know the PL well, particularly young English ones.

Is Onomah not ear marked for the Dembele role?

Interesting thanks, I did see one game where he looked terrible and gave the ball away loads, and the crowd got on his back, but it was only one game. Other games he's looked good but obviously I only really watched your televised games.

Sort of true, but I believe if you have an interest in Ross it'll be because Alli will be off in 12 months time, or perhaps January. So the logic may be to bed in a ready made replacement now.

This myth really needs to die. It just isn't true.

See this is a strange one, for the England under 19's/20s Onomah plays the Dembele role and looked amazing (against others in his age group). However when Poch has played him in the first team games like Cups etc he has been played as one of the offensive 3 out wide, and he's looked dreadful (may be a little harsh but he hasn't impressed at all). Onomah is obviously suited to the Dembele role but he has never played there for Spurs in the first team, so not sure what is going to happen there.

I can't see us selling Alli in January or even next summer. As ever it all depends on clubs like Bayern, Madrid and Barcelona, if they come calling and they are willing to break the world transfer record it may well happen, until then it won't.

There isn't a chance we would sell any key players in January anyway.
