Ross Barkley

Spurs fan here. I am really keen for us to sign Barkley. Poch seems to have the golden touch with young English players and I honestly think the reason Poch wants him is he believes he can make this kid a top quality PL player. I also wonder that instead of a number 10 which Barkley sees himself in, Poch views him as a long term successor to Dembele in the middle of the park. Both skillfull and strong on the ball. Dembele is 30 this season and will have to be managed so that he doesn't pick up injuries.

I wonder what Everton fans think, if he could play this type of role? He isn't ousting Alli from No 10 let's be honest.

Regarding the likelihood of a transfer, I think this has deadline day written all over it.

Playing from deeper, carrying the ball and running games is what he is very capable of.

Ross has already said he looks up to Dembele, last season was his best in terms of holding the ball, and he was very strong on the ball, and very hard to get it off him. He probably held onto it to long at times, mainly due to none of our players making the runs for him.

I also think that he didn't look good in the last couple of years because around him were players not making clever runs. He's got such a good group of players around him that he's bound to do better - all he had till now was Rom asking for impossible passes to be played to him

I can't see us selling Alli in January or even next summer. As ever it all depends on clubs like Bayern, Madrid and Barcelona, if they come calling and they are willing to break the world transfer record it may well happen, until then it won't.

There isn't a chance we would sell any key players in January anyway.

I can see Madrid in for him for £100m+ if he has another fantastic season - he's the type of player who'd fit in well there. Spurs are a massive club, don't mean to demean or agitate, but as you acknowledge some clubs are on another level and Alli will be on a few shopping lists if he carries on the way he is.

I don't see Bayern being able to afford the fee it'd take like, and he doesn't fit how Barca set up.

I don't think it's as much about being spiteful as not being held to ransom by one of our players or by one of our competitors. It's send the wrong message plus, with the squad we appear to be building I genuinely see Spurs as one of our major competitors next season. Why let them have a top notch player for a bargain price.

This.

25m from Spurs and they pip us to 4th spot. No thanks.

He signs (ideally), we get £40m+ (compromise), or he sits in the stands for a year and leaves on a free.

Only other workaround is he goes abroad for a reasonable fee.
No chance should we be allowing an England player to leave his club for a rival.

He'll suit your set of bottlers. Next time you want to feebly give away the title, Ross is the man you need.

Im curious as to what wages he will be getting.

We have supposedly offered him £100k - £120k, but by all reports, Kane is Spurs' highest paid player on £100k. So its not as if he will be going for a big payrise - think its more of a personal issue personally.

He can hold the ball all day long and provided he's actually in shape, which he was this year but not in prior years, his offensive output would be fine. But he can't tackle. He can't mark anyone. He isn't going to win any balls back for you.

Therein lies the problem with Ross. Koeman recognizes this, which is why he continues to try and push him higher up the pitch and have him be more aggressive, take guys on, etc. Prior to Gana, Davies, and Morgan, he had to come way back to just get the ball. He wants a ton of the ball, he can hold on to it very well, but most of the time it results in little. That's why when geniuses post stats saying how he's created 84 chances in the past year, it's kind of misleading because he constantly has the ball. He can create chances, but he isn't amazingly efficient at is.

Sadly, when he DOES get closer to the goal, he can still hold it well, and can be dangerous, but he's not decisive, he's not aggressive, and it drives Koeman crazy. He's got decent touch, decent pace, decent shot, but his mentality stinks. Again, if he could tackle, mark, and win balls, he'd be an amazing box to box guy. But he just can't.
Ouch. Hard to disagree with that to be fair.

Let's just say I will weep for about 72 hours continuously after you sign him.

See this is a strange one, for the England under 19's/20s Onomah plays the Dembele role and looked amazing (against others in his age group). However when Poch has played him in the first team games like Cups etc he has been played as one of the offensive 3 out wide, and he's looked dreadful (may be a little harsh but he hasn't impressed at all). Onomah is obviously suited to the Dembele role but he has never played there for Spurs in the first team, so not sure what is going to happen there.

Another spurs fan posted a few weeks back saying he's been played wide to bed him in a bit before pushing him centrally. A bit like what we're doing with DCL. RE Barkley. Personally I think he's not ready to be CM in a midfield 2 but has the potential to do that. Needs to work on his defensive side of his game and currently better as part of a midfield 3 or part of a front 3 which he did for us last year

If one of the big European clubs come after Alli and he wants to go then, be it January or next summer then I'm afraid he will be away. The players now dictate the transfer market.
Pochettino may just be future proofing.
