Ross Barkley

There is nothing wrong with Ross that a decent manager won't fix. Martinez certainly to blame for his lack of stamina and poor conditioning and i would argue that spending most of the 2014/2015 season out of the left wing did him no favours either. Ross needs a manager who will be brutally honest with him. He's 22 and for the last 3 seasons he's had a manager constantly telling the world he's a phenomenal young talent who should be aloud to make mistakes. He now needs a manager who will cut those mistakes out and take him up a level. If he misses out this time round it's not the end of his world and its certainly not too late for him to be the player we all believe he can be.

You also don't know if the Ferrarkley is now fundamentally damaged and needs recalling...

Anyway, the point is that football is a continuous conveyor belt, and we shouldn't be too concerned if a particular player doesn't make it.

Wow. Struggling to believe this. He is 22 years of age with massive potential and youre writing him off already because he's had half a bad season when the rest of the team was underperforming too!?

Are you going to stick to this claim that anyone who has ever been marked out of a game by a dog isn't world class?

Just so I can let Henry, Pirlo and Bale know.

No, of course not.

But the three you listed proved their quality over their careers.

Alli has been brilliant this season, but people are acting as if he's the finished article whereas, let's be honest, he's played just as well as Barkley did during his breakthrough campaign.

One poster just claimed 'Alli is twice the player Barkley is' - it's a ridiculous statement.

Not writing him of at all. Merely saying if it doesn't end well then there'll always be someone to come through and take his spot.

We all thought Rodwell was going to be future England captain. We've done fine without him.

For the life of me I cannot see the need for Wilshire, Dier, Henderson, Drinkwater to cover 2 positions in the team. Especially when you've got Milner in there as well to play as the utility man.

I'd leave out both Henderson and Drinkwater. Like it or not, wiltshire is going, Dier is a must as he is acting as a 4th CB and Milner is a shoe in for his versitilty.

I think the delay in Roy announcing who is out is due to Sturridges injury, so I think the third person will be Sturridge or Rashford. I think Townsend deserves his place, assuming the wide men are Sterling and unbelievably Lallana who I personally think is utter gash, We'll need Townsend as someone to come off the bench.

Barkley has to go in my eyes - He's a diamond. This has got Hoddle leaving Gazza out of France 98 written all over it

Agreed about Rodwell, but what did he actually ever do for us besides that goal against United and passing the ball sideways a few times?

Ross has already done ten times what Rodwell did for us, he's got so much more to his game.

We should be having a bit of patience with Ross and aspiring for a midfield 3 of him, Davies and Dowell together rather than taking the mindset 'if it doesnt work out for him soon we need to get shut of him and give someone else a go'

Ah, OK. You just seemed to be using that as the sole criteria for judging talent there.

To be honest, I think Alli is the better player, and by some distance at the moment. Being a driving force in a team that makes a serious title push is nothing to be sniffed at.

I find that a lot of fans are just desperate for other team's players to fail, so it's difficult to have an objective conversation.

But why would that be so bad? Why does Barkley have this control over Everton fans that I'm not sure I've ever seen to this extent before?

Maybe this marks me as not being a loyal fan or something, but I guess I just don't think anyone deserves limitless get out of jail free cards.

Well said.

Someone needs to sit him down and go through his weaknesses with him and explain that he needs to focus on improving on them. Martinez seems to have allowed him to just ignore them, or gone about things the wrong way. One example was Martinez instructing Barkley to be adventurous in the final third with through balls etc. It's clear to me that a killer ball is one of Barkley's main attacking weaknesses. I don't think consistently trying and failing is doing him any good. Obviously he should try the odd one in a match situation but he should be working on that in training more than in a game.

Then his more obvious weaknesses are his work rate, and naivety when having a poor game. With the injury he suffered I don't expect him to be flying in to 50-50's but it's not acceptable that he doesn't even put any pressure on the opposition in those situations. He even does it in the air at times too. Then when he's having a poor game, he needs to learn that he has to stick to the basics and not give the ball away. He was so wasteful in possession on Friday and it's frustrating for everyone to see when he's like that.

But they're his weaknesses. It just shows how negative a footballing nation England are when the manager would rather stick with steady players like Milner and Henderson than work with players like Barkley to improve him. I get the feeling Hodgson has little time for him and isn't prepared to help him gain confidence. He'd sooner rely on players who contributed to us getting 1 point from 9 in the last world cup. It's always the same with England.

Who's said we'll give him them?
I'm just saying don't throw the baby out with the bathwater after a poor half a season when everyone else in the team has been crap too.

Limitless get out of jail cards!? He is 22 years of age. 22!! And he scored 12 goals and got 11 assists this season in a season when we were awful as a team.

I dont think anyone can doubt his ability, he has got all the attributes to be a top player, when he is on form he looks a proper class act.

Yes, we havent seen him produce his form on a consistent basis so far. But for me that is his only problema. Consistency.

If he gets to 27 and he's still as inconsistent as he is now then OK, maybe he has used up all his 'get out of jail free cards'. But to suggest he has already run out of 'get out of jail free cards' at 22 sounds like you are writing him off to be.

The lad is a top top prospect, and he is a local lad, the best we have had since Rooney, they dont come around to often, we need a bit of patience with him. When he becomes consistent he is going to be top class

He needs aggression in his game, a nasty streak, more fight, I don't know if that can be taught to him, he seems like he's just too soft a character, at Wembley he was nearly crying because he thought the fans were booing him, Jags had to reassure him.

Grow a pair Ross or you will waste the immense talent you have.

Goal v City, QPR, Newcastle away, Norwich, Watford. When Henderson Lallana Milner or Delph get anywhere near the levels of those goals then Barkley should fear for his place.

Instead a player who has been fit all season and has some of the best stats in the prem for English attacking midfielders has his place under threat from:

Sterling: in and out the City team, poor form nearly all year, seems to have lost his pace and technical ability

Henderson: injured all year, schooled at recent Euros and World Cup

Delph: don't even need to put anything

Sturridge: injury prone, similar to other strikers, will be backup at best, can he change a game of Vardy Kane and Rooney haven't impacted it?

If Barkley played for Liverpool or United his place wouldn't even be getting questioned now.
