Ross Barkley

yes I was at the match and heard a lot of people groaning, shouting at him trying to gee him up, he was lethargic for the first hour.

I'll try and watch the match on the telly and see if that shows anything different to what I saw.

Don't get me wrong, like every Evertonian I think that Ross is the Dog's doodaa's and hope that he fulfills his vast potential .. even if only by 50%.
Definitely lethargic in his half hearted attempt to close the Matic shot down.I think we'll just have to accept that while he's still young his concentration levels will fluctuate, but can you imagine the 26 year old Barkley? Just hope we still have him then.

He had two holding midfielders on him and he still assisted twice against one of the top defences on the league. He was really good yesterday. The entire team backed off after Matic's goal and we were cagey all over the park until half time, but after the break we just bosses it from start to finish and Ross was massive in that up against high quality players.

He's been better this season, but still has a long way to go yet, to fulfill his huge potential.

The moment where he drove forward on the break really well and then took about 5 minutes too long to release Kone ahead of him in the second half which resulted in a really promising break turning to nothing was classic Ross indecision. Hopefully more game time will see him sort that side of his game out over the next few months.

Agreed.

Can't understand how fans get on his back when his overall contribution this season so far has been fantastic.

Other teams' fans must think we're total idiots moaning at our 21 year old midfield prodigy who has 2 goals and 3 assists and is one of the best talents I've seen play for the club, but who occasionally gives the ball away or makes a bad decision.

He looks back to the player we saw two years ago in terms of confidence and ability to influence a game. He wants the ball and is beginning to dictate the tempo of games from a deeper position.

I think last seasons difficulties will have served him well.

Does Ross really give the ball away that much? Get the feeling people are watching for it. The stats certainly don't back up the poor passer / wasteful reputation.

According to the above article (written last season) his ball retention and pass completion rates are the best of similar players around Europe and he has by far the best dribbling outcomes of any of his peers.
The only thing lacking was end product, which he seems to have added to his game now.

I think we have a very Everton mentality. We love grit and passion, but have little patience for players who take risks.

Reputation and preconceptions are everything unfortunately. Much like how everyone thinks Besic is always going to get a red, Mirallas is lazy or that Barry must always have a bad game. It's just nonsense.

Ross's decision making needed/needs to improve, hence the low goals/assists. But given how he's started this season it's immensely promising. He's still making some poor decisions but it's improved massively and he's been at the heart of everything thus far. Given his dribbling ability and -- a rarity for that position -- his raw physicality, he has the potential to be absolutely ace. Fingers crossed.

I've always wondered why Hoolahan didn't go to a bigger club in his career. I know he was earmarked for Villa not so long ago, but he's better than them. He'd have done a job for us for a couple of seasons and I cant understand why Martinez didn't see it.

I thought he would´ve been a good squad option to bring in instead of Pienaar/Osman, in that first Jan window under Martinez. With hindsight you can see he would have been quite useful to us.

Hopefully Ross continues with this fine form though and will be responsible for a fair share of our attacking play. He still has his flaws, but it´s not just any 21 year old who holds possession that well and that confidently against two or three big midfielders playing for the champions.

Used to bug me when he lets players go so easily and shirks the defensive side, but most players charged with so much attacking duties will be given that remit from an attack minded manager.

He did take a bit too long, but I think Kone could´ve held the line and kept the option alive for Ross. Saw it as Kones fault more so than Floss Sparkleys.

He not a defensive player and needs to focus on attacking qualities, why does every player have to run around like Henderson

That moment on Saturday when Ross delayed and delayed on the break and failed to release the ball to Kone who was in the clear: that's exactly the reason we require a specialist playmaker. Barkley is playing well, but he's not got that type of feel yet in terms of when to hold or give.
