2017/18 Ross Barkley

There's no outcome to this whole saga that would surprise me, whether it's a move to Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle, West Ham, or a new contract at Everton. Whatever the final scene, I simply can't see Barkley as a manipulative, calculating money-grabber, however. His agent may well be, but Barkley always strikes me as a little boy, who is currently confused, torn, and, in all likelihood, a little scared.

Exactly. Spurs players get between £40k & £110k per week. For argument sake lets assume Barkley would be paid £80k pw. At Chelsea he would earn at least £125kpw (probably more). Over the course of a 5 year contract he would earn £11.7mn less in wages. Even if Spurs paid him a £5mn signing on fee (we wouldn't) he is still £6.7mn worse off.

So while i can understand the frustration of EFC fans regarding missing out on a nice transfer fee (would rankle me in the same situation) accusations of being a 'money grabber' are wide of the mark (IMO).

If he arrives at Spurs on a Bosman the signing on fee would be more like £10 -£15 million. This type of signing on fee would be paid over the term of the contract and conviently clubs tend not to include these sums when talking about a players wage.
Spurs have reached a cross roads in terms of what they pay their players indeed Llorente is now said to be on the same as Kane.
Berkeley wouldn't be getting £125k a week at Chelsea indeed if you look at the numbers being reported the sum you talk about would be more than they pay the majority of players including the likes of Luiz,Kante, Cahill, Alonso. my guess is he would be on at most £100k. If they had paid a £35 million fee he would have got 5% of the fee and probably around £500k signing on fee. Chelsea pay far more for their top players than the likes of Spurs but RB wouldn't fall into that category.

I do agree that mid range players at Chelsea appear to be paid more than similar players at Spurs but not to the tune of £4 million a year more like £1-2 million or £20/40k a week but when you add back in the signing on fee be it at either Chelsea or indeed Spurs what is going on is all about money

Re: bold part. How do we know we didn't have discussions with him last summer and he said he was happy and indicated he would sign a new contract when offered one? Again, no one on this forum really knows what's happened/not happened over the past year.

May had had talks with him last summer mate.

I remember Koeman coming out in the middle of December 2016 after being asked about Barkley's (he had 18 months left) contract, he said "It is not the priority at the moment but in the new year, yes."

Dont see a problem with him tbh, Everton offered him a contract he doesn't want to sign or play under the current management, he wants to play elsewhere. Happens everyday. Letting the contract run down is Evertons problem not his. Clubs sell players while they're under contract, so they cant moan if someone fulfills a contract and wants to leave. Can't have your cake and eat.

True this, he has shafted us big time but problem is he can, its a bit lame people are still trying to blame either the club or the manager when as you say he is perfectly entitled to do this, obviously only a dirty rat would do such a thing but our problem is he can

Okay claiming the higher ground lad, but you would probably be calling your home grown player exactly the same, if the shoe was on the other foot. Barkley will have cost this club a helluva lot of money when this fiasco is over. Hope he's proud of himself.

True, but still a rat who shouldn't see any opportunity to play at this club again.

I have already admitted that mate. I said i would feel the same way if one of our players did the same, no arguments. I'm just not sure he has acted out of 'greed', stupidity maybe.

I'm not wrong though.

Every shred of evidence points to Chelsea as the money option. There wage bill is more than double of ours and Spurs.

If we are going to look at other methods of payment as you say, these will be linked to agents payments and fees. Chelsea last season paid more than double of Everton and Spurs combined.

Whatever way you try to work it, Chelsea pay more in wages and signing on fees.

If he goes to Spurs, its not for the money but a career choice.

Wrong. Again.

I said it was all about money. Not merely salaries. And off you go on a spin about CFC paying more than others.

If Barkley goes in winter, Spurs will not pay more than 20 million. Why should they? If he goes next summer then Levy gets him for free.

If Barkley sticks it out till next summer then he will get a multi-million signing on fee from a grateful Levy. And possibly a smaller fee for dragging it out to next winter.

Chelsea is the money option for EFC not Barkley.
