If Martinez could have got him to sign a 5 year deal he would have but I think there was even trouble getting him to renew the deal back then. That'd how it looked from the outside.

Agreed. From the moment he burst onto the scene pundits (mostly former RS) were saying he could be the next this or that and that he should leave. He's also had the likes of Rom harping on for the last few years saying how he's a world class striker who deserves to be at a top club and he's seen one of his best mates in Stones leave to play under the best manager in world football. He probably thinks he deserves the same. No doubt Koeman didn't help the situation and the club have probably ballsed up the relationship somewhere along the line too because that's what we do but Ross is leaving because he wants too not because Everton are forcing him out. He may go on to be the next great English midfielder and we'll be kicking ourselves for letting him go or he could be the next Jack Rodwell. He's the potential to be both - it'll be interesting to see what happens.

not sad to see him go now, i'd just be gutted if we didn't get any transfer fee. Years of nurturing and developing him, what was it two triple leg breaks? Now this long lay off.

Whilst i understand the sentiment, the lads a professional sportsman first, an Everton fan second.
It doesn't make it easier for us mere fans to accept like, but its proper money involved here for Ross.
I can't quite remember the time line but the stones Chelsea transfer saga may have put him off signing a 5 year deal.
I think it's pretty clear he probably never had any plan to stay. Maybe for few months after Moshiri came in but both him and Rom quickly came to the conclusion that was a bit of a con.
Any everton fan who feels £5m a year isn't enough for him to play for Everton, is no Everton fan at all. They are a slimy little rat.
I would keep him and offer him a choice.
Gardening leave or signing a contract extension with a buyout the same as the Chelsea deal.
Although that said his injury may put me off even that.
Maybe it is better to just let him go.

It's obviously never been confirmed officially. But all the rumours and indications are that he was offered around 100k per week, if not more.
